With its coupe-inspire styling, the 4-door 2015 Volkswagen CC looks every bit as contemporary as it did when it was originally introduced in 2008 (and freshened slightly in 2012). This handsome 4-door that sits atop the VW sedan hierarchy, for all its modern looks, has more than its share of old school charm, thanks to the 6-speed manual gearbox in our 2.0T Sport model.
As a result, the CC is a study in contrasts. At a time when dual clutch gearboxes are all the rage, you can have a three-pedal 4-door possessing solid German ride and handling. At the same time it pushes your enthusiast button with the shifter and sharp steering, the engine beneath the hood, a 200-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder delivers compact car fuel economy with a 32 mpg highway rating from the EPA.
Time for a refresh
Overall, the CC works well, but the lack of a push button start (you insert the key fob into a dash receptacle for the ignition) and the tiny center console screen are just two indications that time is quickly passing the CC by — and that an all-new model should be on its way soon.
In the meantime, the CC 2.0T has plenty of features to recommend it. The first is the relative lack of them on the road-this is a car you will not see on every corner. But perhaps best of all, priced at $33,860 including destination, the CC is nicely equipped with the aura of a premium to near-luxury car at price point close to the average transaction price of a new car. In fact, it’s some $12,000 less than the top of the line CC, which features all-wheel drive and potent 280-horsepower 3.6-liter V6.
And even with those savings, there’s not much in the way of creature comforts missing. The CC has just about everything including heated seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, rearview camera, power seats, cruise, central locking, rain-sensing wipers, and on and on. The 2015 Volkswagen CC is understated, elegant, fun-to-drive and above all, exudes an air of exclusivity. A great package for those shopping for a sedan that is definitely not mainstream.
