2015 Hyundai Azera Limited Quick Take

With all the attention and ad money focused on the redesigned Hyundai Sonata and Genesis, the 2015 Azera Limited sedan flies under the radar in the Korean automaker’s product line. Larger than the Sonata and sharing a front-drive layout, the Azera is pitched as a full-size car, not quite as luxurious as the rear-drive Genesis above it. Still, it does have a premium presence to its styling and a high level of standard equipment that positions it favorably against rivals like the Buick LaCrosse.

The Azera’s sweeping lines and chrome accent strips recall the previous generation Sonata — it lacks the cleaner more angular look and large Audi-like grille sported by the sedans on either side of it in the lineup. The interior is smartly styled, roomy and comfortable, a reflection of the driving dynamics which decidedly favors a smooth ride over the ability to carve up back roads. There’s only one engine, a 293-horsepower 3.3-liter V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It’s not quite as stout as the 311 horsepower 3.8-liter offered in the Genesis and delivers about the same fuel economy at 19 mpg city/28 mpg highway.

Loaded Limited

The 2015 Azera Limited comes with a long list of standard equipment including a panoramic sunroof, 19-inch wheels and tires, HID headlamps with automatic high beams, hands-free smart trunk opener, heat/ventilated power seats, 8-inch touchscreen with navigation, leather interior, and driver assists including lane departure warning, blind spot detection and rear parking assist. With a base price of $38,200, our test car came with one option, $125 carpeted floor mats, and together with $895 delivery cost $39,220, just slightly more than the $38,000 base Genesis sedan.  

With its low profile in the lineup and a look that is dated compared to its more contemporary siblings, the 2015 Hyundai Azera Limited is nonetheless a bargain given the high level of equipment. Even in the base $34,895 model (including destination) you get standard navigation and a backup camera. Considering that Hyundai is offering a $2,000 rebate or a $299 per month 3-year lease deal with $1,999 down, the Azera belongs on everyone’s family car shopping list.
