The eagerly awaited EPA fuel economy stats for the all-new, aluminum-bodied 2015 Ford F-150 have been released, and the news is good, although perhaps not quite as earth-shattering as might have been expected. Topping the lineup’s efficiency rankings is the rear-drive F-150 fitted with the optional 325-horsepower/2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 that earns EPA figures of 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 22-mpg combined. The ratings give it bragging rights among gasoline-powered full-size pickups and dip only modestly to 18/25/20 mpg and 17/24/20 mpg on RWD F-150 models packing the base 282-horse/3.6-liter V6 and range-topping 365-horse/3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 alternatives.

By comparison, the new F-150’s numbers better the 18/24/20-mpg ratings of its rival, a similarly configured 2015 Chevrolet Silverado with a 285-horsepower/4.3-liter V6 and are closer to the new mid-size 2015 Chevy Colorado that nets 18/26/21 mpg marks when fitted with its optional 305-horse/3.6-liter V6. However, best-in-class honors for the full-size-pickup category still remain with the 2015 Ram 1500 that boasts 20/28/23-mpg ratings when fitted with its optional 240-horse/3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. Mated to a class-exclusive 8-speed automatic transmission, the turbodiesel engine’s stout 420 lb-ft of torque gives the Ram 1500 a 9,200-pound tow rating when properly equipped.
