GM’s new mid-size pickup truck duo will have something extra to brag about when they go on sale this fall thanks to a pair of unique safety touches. For openers, extended-cab versions of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon feature a trick rear jump seat capable of complying with recommendations of most child-seat manufacturers that at least 80 percent of the unit’s base be supported by the lower seat cushion. GM’s patent-pending answer to that challenge involves extending the cushion length by removing the headrest from the passenger-side seating position and sliding it horizontally into anchors located in the seat base.

"It’s an elegant solution that makes efficient use of the limited space in the rear seat in this type of vehicle," said Eduardo Bugelli, safety performance team lead. "The additional seat cushion length provides more support to the child restraint, which helps to reduce the rotation and the risk of injury in a crash."

GM also confirmed that the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon would be the first mid-size pickups to offer a Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning systems as part of an optional Driver Alert Package.
