Intent on grabbing a larger share of the hot U.S. compact crossover market, Chevrolet has announced its new 2015 Trax model will open at $20,995 when it hits showrooms in January. First seen at the New York Auto Show and currently on sale in 66 other countries, the Trax shares a platform with the Buick Encore and rivals the Kia Soul, Nissan Juke and Mitsubishi Outlander. Available in LS, LT and LTZ trims, the Trax is powered by GM’s 1.4-liter turbocharged EcoTec 4-cylinder engine that makes 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Backed by a standard 6-speed automatic, the engine returns 26/34 city/highway mpg on front-drive models and 24/31 mpg when the 5-passenger Trax has the available AWD system that adds $1,500 to its bottom line.

Options include next-gen OnStar 4G LTE with built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, Siri Eyes Free, SiriusXM Satellite radio and a downloadable GPS-enabled navigation. In addition to numerous smaller storage areas, the space-efficient cabin of the new Trax can swallow 18.7 cu ft of cargo in the rear bay with the 60/40 second row bench up or 48.4 cu ft with it folded flat.
