It’s now official. The 2014 Cadillac ELR — first extended-range electric vehicle from GM’s luxury division — will make its formal debut next month in Detroit. A visual extension of the design theme introduced on the Cadillac Converj Concept that wowed the crowds at the Detroit show in 2009, the production version of this striking coupe will be fitted with a tailored variation of the E-REV plug-in powertrain found in the Chevrolet Volt. It features an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack coupled with a gasoline-powered range-extender 4-cylinder engine that can generate electricity on the fly to keep the car going when the original battery charge is depleted.
While the brief Cadillac release provided no specific details, it has previously revealed that the new ELR will be built at the same Detroit-Hamtramck plant that also is home to the Volt and will be the first two-door car to be roll off an assembly line there since the 1999 Cadillac Eldorado.
