2013 Hyundai Veloster adds Michelin Pilot Super Sport tire option

Intent on infusing even more handling capability into the 2013 versions of its Veloster and Velsoter Turbo, Hyundai has announced that it will offer super-sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport performance tires to the option roster of both models.

Already a benchmark enthusiast tire that’s standard fitment on a number of the world’s supercars including several Ferrari models, the Pilot Super Sport for the Veloster duo will be a Z-rated 215/40 summer shoe. According to Hyundai, changing up to these premium Michelins increases maximum lateral grip from 0.82 to 0.94 on the Veloster Turbo and trims its 60-0 mph stopping distances from 135 to 121 feet  in the dry and 157 to 136 feet under wet conditions. Hyundai will begin offering the Michelin Pilot Super Sport upgrade rubber next month at a price of $1,200 for either Veloster model.

"We heard the appeal from opinion-leading media and purist enthusiasts," said Mike O’Brien, vice president of corporate and product planning for Hyundai Motor America. "They told us that as good as Veloster is, the suspension calibration and especially the new powertrain of the turbo model screamed for even more outright grip to satisfy enthusiast buyers. The Pilot Super Sport summer tire option for Veloster is another example of HyundaiSpeed in response to specific buyer groups, like performance enthusiasts."
