The opulent 2023 BMW X7 is the pinnacle of BMW SUVs. It’s the biggest and most luxurious offering in the German luxury brand’s lineup, with a hefty price tag to match. This large luxury SUV offers a tranquil ride, powerful engines, and the latest technology, but the third row of seats and the cargo hold aren’t very spacious. The X7 is a direct rival to the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. It also competes with the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator, but its American competitors are bigger and roomier at a similar price point.
The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors, but here's a general idea of what buyers are currently paying for used 2023 BMW X7 models when purchasing from a dealership.
Original MSRP | KBB Fair Purchase Price (national avg.) | |||
---|---|---|---|---|
$78,845 | $66,359 | |||
$104,095 | $78,608 | |||
$145,995 | TBD |
For reference, the 2023 BMW X7 originally had a starting sticker price of $78,845, with the range-topping X7 ALPINA XB7 Sport Utility 4D starting at $145,995.
Driving the BMW X7 is a supremely luxurious experience. Thanks to a well-tuned suspension and a long wheelbase, the X7 glides over the road. The cabin is quiet, and the seats are comfortable, but you get to hear a satisfying exhaust note if you get the V8-powered M60i.
The base 6-cylinder engine delivers the performance you need for the daily commute and family-hauling duties. If you’re desring a more muscular luxury SUV, then the V8-powered M60i is what you’re looking for. The V8 brings a 0-60 mph time of only 4.5 seconds, which is very quick for an SUV this size.
Despite BMW’s reputation, the X7 does not exactly drive like a sports sedan. If you’re looking for sporty handling in a big SUV, you’ll want the optional Dynamic Handling Package. It brings 4-wheel steering, Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview, and M Sport brakes, significantly improving agility and comfort.
Interior quality is a highlight of the BMW X7. The seats are roomy and comfortable in the first two rows, but the third row is a little cramped and best reserved for children. We love the power-operated second-row seats that make the third row easy to access.
The X7 has a customizable interior with several options for different leathers and interior trim choices. Some premium options include open-pore wood trim, full Merino leather upholstery, and an Alcantara headliner.
The cargo space in BMW’s biggest SUV is disappointing. It has 12.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row of seats. It gets better if you fold down the third row, increasing to 48.6 cubic feet. This is less cargo space than the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and significantly less than the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.
The BMW X7 translates the brand’s design language into a big SUV, which works very well. This stately SUV looks luxurious by anyone’s standards with its prominent kidney grille, handsome light signature, and well-sculpted body lines.
You can get a sportier look by upgrading to the M60i trim or adding the M Sport Package to the base trim. This includes an appearance package with an aerodynamic body kit, Shadowline exterior trim, and unique wheels.
Although the X7 is the biggest SUV in the BMW lineup, it’s smaller than you might expect if you’re used to American full-size luxury SUVs. The X7 is about the same size as the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, but the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Jeep Grand Wagoneer are all bigger, especially the Escalade and Navigator in their long-wheelbase variants.
TWIN-TURBO V8
The twin-turbocharged V8 engine that powers the X7 M60i delivers thrilling performance and an intoxicating exhaust note. We recommend it if your budget allows it.
DRIVING ASSISTANCE PROFESSIONAL PACKAGE
This highly recommended option package adds full-speed adaptive cruise control, automatic lane-change, evasion assistant, and more.
The base X7 xDrive40i is well-equipped. The base powertrain is a turbocharged mild-hybrid 6-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
Standard features include a panoramic moonroof, satin aluminum roof rails, adaptive LED headlights, parking sensors, Multi-Contour seats, power-adjustable front seats, 4-zone automatic climate control, ambient interior lighting, a head-up display, a power steering column, and an air suspension system.
The standard infotainment system is a giant 12.3-inch screen loaded with navigation, SiriusXM, HD Radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and two USB ports. You also get a customizable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
The X7 comes with some nice standard safety features, but many more affordable SUVs have more standard driver assistance tech. The X7 has automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.
The BMW X7 offers many individual options and option packages to make it a customizable luxury SUV. The option package we recommend the most is the Driving Assistance Professional Package. This adds full-speed adaptive cruise control, active lane-keeping assist, steering and traffic jam assistant, automatic lane-change, evasion assistant, and front cross-traffic alert. It’s available for both trims of the X7.
Drivers looking for a sporty SUV but who don’t quite have the budget for the V8 engine will enjoy the M Sport Package. It adds a sporty appearance package inside and out that includes unique wheels, an aerodynamic body kit, Shadowline exterior trim, an Alcantara headliner, and an M steering wheel. The M Sport Professional Package adds performance upgrades like an M Sport exhaust and brakes plus an illuminated grille.
Drivers in cold climates will be interested in the Climate Comfort Package, which has heated first- and second-row seats, ventilated front seats, and 5-zone climate control.
You can add more luxury features with the Premium Package and Executive Package. The Premium Package adds soft-close automatic doors, power rear sunshades, a premium audio system, and gesture control. The fancier Executive Package further adds massaging front seats, class controls, a Panoramic Sky Lounge LED roof, and even heated and cooled cupholders.
Upgrading to the M60i trim brings a mighty twin-turbo V8 engine to the X7 with a big boost in power and torque. It also adds the contents of the M Sport Package as standard equipment. Option packages for the M60 include the Driving Assistance Professional Package, M Sport Professional Package, Executive Package, and Climate Comfort Package.
The BMW X7 has two turbocharged mild-hybrid engine options: a 3.0-liter inline-6 or a 4.4-liter V8. The 6-cylinder is a more practical choice for most drivers. It delivers strong enough performance for commuting and family-hauling duty while returning decent fuel economy for an SUV this size.
The twin-turbo V8 in the M60i model has much more muscle with significantly more power and torque than the 6-cylinder. However, you’ll pay for it at the pump and the dealer. The price of entry is over $100,000, and it’s not very good on gas. But the extra excitement is worth every penny if you have a big appetite for performance in a luxury SUV and an equally big budget.
Every BMW X7 employs an 8-speed automatic transmission and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The X7 has a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds when properly equipped.
