These days, hybrid powertrains are available in so many cars, SUVs, trucks, and minivans that a hybrid is basically an engine option. Even the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) includes hybrids in its testing when it performs crash tests for new vehicles every year. In other words, if the Civic is a Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) with the gas engine, the hybrid is a TSP+ as well.
So which hybrid-powered vehicles are the safest? We’ve included the vehicles that were awarded an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+, as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) highest rating of 5 Stars. We also included some models that have not been tested by NHTSA yet, as they still have the potential to get a 5-Star rating sometime this year.
Because hybrids are essentially treated as a higher trim level when there is also a gas-only engine choice, these models typically have the bulk of the safety features you would want when buying a car. We’ve highlighted some of the advanced safety features that come standard.
Note: While we are focused on hybrids that prioritize fuel economy over added power, mild hybrids like the Mazda CX-90 and CX-70, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Volvo XC90 would also qualify. Both the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra hybrids would have made this list, too.
