While stats like range, MPGe, and charging time are very important when it comes to buying an electric vehicle (EV), so is safety. As ranges get longer and the electric car becomes a vehicle for the family to take on the road, it becomes even more essential to know that your family will be safe.
We’ve compiled a list of all the electric cars that have been given the Top Safety Pick (TSP) or Top Safety Pick+ awards by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), as well as 5 Stars by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). (Note: Two 2025 model-year cars made the list because they earned Top Safety Pick awards based on the 2024 testing criteria.) We lean more heavily on the IIHS scores, as it conducts more extensive tests, so we’ve also included models that have not yet been tested by NHTSA. We don’t think they should be left off just because they haven’t been tested yet. We’ve also included some of the advanced safety features each vehicle comes with.
Here are the safest electric cars of 2025, in alphabetical order. There are many cars that the IIHS hasn’t tested yet, so this list will grow as they continue to test vehicles.
