Predicted 5-Year Cost to Own: $48,906
Compared to Segment Average: -$4,893
The Lexus NX makes its encore appearance as a 5-Year Cost to Own Award winner. For 2021, it gets a slight bump in price over last year’s model, but remains one of Lexus’ greatest hits. The 5-passenger compact SUV doesn’t just speak the language of Lexus — precision engineering, reliable as Raylan Givens, and justifiably proud of its resale value. It also holds its own with a superb balance of luxury and safety, presented in a variety of packages.
This small Lexus ute works hard for its popularity. The turbocharged 235-horsepower NX 300 (starting at $37,610) is offered in front-drive or all-wheel drive. So is the sportier F Sport ($39,710). Further, there’s a 194-horsepower NX 300h hybrid version ($40,160). It comes standard with all-wheel drive and respectable fuel economy of 33 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway.
A Well-Rounded Luxury Value
Our Expert Review of the NX gives the Lexus its full due. “The 2021 Lexus NX 300 and NX 300h luxury compact SUV/crossovers each have a long list of standard features, decent interior space, competitive pricing, and an impeccable reputation for reliability and strong resale values. That’s a compelling combination of qualities.” We added, “If the NX doesn’t make a driving enthusiast’s heart beat a little faster, that’s a pretty insignificant downside. Economy is more successful for the Lexus NX than excitement.”
Even with all this variation, the 2021 Lexus NX spends so little time boasting, that it’s an easy little SUV to miss. It has 10-way power-adjustable front seats, simulated leather upholstery, a power tilt/telescoping steering column, premium audio, and power-folding side-view mirrors. These are among a raft of other features available with this Lexus. The Lexus NX wins followers without having to boast or broadcast (that Lexus spindle grille notwithstanding).
Likewise, the 2021 addition of blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert to a bundle of standard safety features doesn’t show off, but it does show long-term concern for the NX owner’s well-being as well as their money. The Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 suite of features comes standard. It includes forward-collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and lane-tracing assist. It also has lane-departure warning/assistance, intelligent high beams, and road-sign assist.
