Predicted 5-Year Cost to Own: $62,116
Sometimes a wagon can win a beauty contest, and sometimes it can win a 5-Year Cost to Own Award. On a good day like this, it can win both and be one of the more pleasurable luxury driving experiences available. Add in the fact that the popular 2020 Volvo V90 can be all-wheel-drive Cross Country-ed up to develop an SUV-like personality, and this wagon’s appeal quickly goes from being academic to visceral.
Starting at $52,455, the 5-door, 5-seat V90 wagon gives you the cargo-carrying freedom of an SUV with the driving dynamics of a sport wagon. A lot less expensive than other luxury wagons like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon, the V90 is also a bit down on power (and up on fuel economy) by comparison. But that doesn’t mean the fun-factor gets compromised.
Like we said in our Expert Review of the car, “Anyone familiar with the less-than-thrilling driving experience of most SUVs and crossover SUVs will find the 2020 V90 and V90 Cross Country T6 to be a different and more engaging animal. The Cross Country treatment entails a slight lift in ride height of 2.6 inches, compared with the regular V90 whose relationship to the road is like most sedans.”
With two available 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engines — one turbocharged (250 horsepower) and the other turbocharged and supercharged (316 horsepower) with either mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission — the Volvo V90 exhibits plenty of Swedish spirit on the road. Its ride comfort reflects the first-class status of the roomy interior, slathered in elegance and reinforced by Volvo levels of safety equipment. Just such a balance of initial pricing, long-term appeal and resale value, and easy-to-live-with mpg and insurance costs makes for a luxury car that’s a low-cost-to-own overachiever.
