The full-size 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV was fully redesigned for the 2021 model year. While this dramatic change made the Tahoe more modern than its predecessors, it hasn’t lost its truck-like capabilities. If you want a family rig that can bring along a lot of passengers and cargo while towing a boat without breaking a sweat, few rivals can match the Tahoe’s versatility.
A Truck For the Family
The new Chevy Tahoe uses a body-on-frame platform based on the Chevy Silverado 1500 full-size pickup, but with a big difference. Instead of the traditional solid rear axle, it has a 4-wheel independent suspension. Not only does that make the ride more comfortable and car-like, it yields a lot more space for passengers and cargo in back. The Tahoe finally has the third-row space you’d expect for an SUV this size, plus plenty of cargo space to boot.
When it comes to its platform and capability, the Tahoe is much like a truck. However, it’s a modern, high-tech family SUV on the inside. A few nice standard amenities include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 10.2-inch infotainment system, tri-zone automatic climate control, and remote start. In the upper trims, the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe can turn into a luxury SUV with features like a panoramic sunroof, a rear entertainment system with two 12.6-inch touch screens, wireless device charging, and Bose premium audio.
Under the Hood
There are two brawny V8 engines and a thrifty turbodiesel inline-6 available, and all are easy to recommend. The base engine is a 355-horsepower, 5.3-liter V8. If you upgrade to the top High Country trim, you get a bigger, stronger, 420-horsepower 6.2-liter V8. Available throughout the model range is the 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel inline-6, which has an impressive torque rating of 460 lb-ft and returns up to 28 highway mpg. All 2021 Tahoes come with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Like most SUVs in this class, rear-wheel drive comes standard and 4-wheel drive is an optional upgrade. If you’re looking for a family vehicle with some off-road chops, then you’ll love the off-road-ready Chevy Tahoe Z71. Four-wheel drive is standard along with a front skid plate, a 2-speed transfer case, a retuned suspension, hill descent control, and a rugged appearance package.
Pricing
Pricing for the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe starts at just under the $50,000 mark and can cross the $80,000 mark in the top trim with options. The Chevy Tahoe is an expensive SUV, but it’s priced similarly to its most direct competitor, the Ford Expedition. A few options that you can expect to pay extra for include the aforementioned available engines, 4-wheel drive, and premium features like the rear entertainment system, upgraded wheels, power-retractable running boards. If you’re looking for a big family SUV that does it all, the Tahoe is a great option.
