For the third year in a row, the aluminum-body Ford Expedition has earned a coveted spot on KBB’s list of 12 Best Family Cars, this time for model-year 2020. While this big and roomy 3-row SUV hardly qualifies as a “car,” the 2020 Ford Expedition — a 2020 KBB Best Buy winner — certainly shines as a family hauler, a 7- or 8-seat truck-based SUV that can be ordered with a bench seat or captain’s chairs in the center row.
Outstanding powertrain
On duty beneath the large hood is a twin-turbo EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 that thinks it’s a powerful V8. It’s available with either 375 or 400 horsepower, and it propels the large Ford through a crisp-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. Both rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations are available, and twin turbos help the direct-injected V6 put out power in a smooth and linear fashion.
Also positive: The 2020 Ford Expedition can tow up to 9,300 pounds (when equipped with the optional tow package), and on top of that it gets up to 24 mpg on the highway. In fact, with EPA fuel economy ratings of 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway/20 mpg combined) the 2020 Ford Expedition is more fuel-efficient than the Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and Toyota Sequoia, three competitors that don’t tow as well, either.
Standard features galore
Ford’s whole 2020 Expedition lineup is now equipped with Co-Pilot 360, a comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistance features. These include forward-collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. This is in addition to other safety hardware such as trailer sway control and a post-crash alert for emergency response.
For an idea of just how well equipped the 2020 Ford Expedition is, consider that the entry-level XLT model has onboard Wi-Fi, 15 cupholders, a power-folding third-row seat, keyless ignition, Bluetooth, four USB ports, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a 6-speaker audio system with a CD player and satellite radio. If we could order only one option, it might be the 360-degree camera system that is a Godsend in tight parking lots.
Quite a range of pricing
While you can order a base rear-drive 2020 Ford Expedition for $54,205, the top models cost quite a bit more. For example, the Expedition Limited, with 20-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free tailgate, and adaptive suspension, begins at $64,700. And the King Ranch, with 22-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a 360-degree camera system, starts at $74,920. If you’d prefer the long-wheelbase Max model, it costs $3,000 extra. Similarly, four-wheel drive also adds $3,000 to the price.
