2023 was the first year for the Best Electric Truck segment of our Best Buy Awards, and the winner was the Ford F-150 Lightning. It’s still the best in its class, so in 2024, the Lightning is the first repeat winner of our Best Electric Truck award. The electric pickup truck segment is still relatively new but growing yearly. The all-electric version of the perennially best-selling Ford F-Series is a great buy for its reasonable pricing, impressive range, and advanced tech features.
Long Range and Powerful Performance
We love the long range and exciting performance of the Ford F-150 Lightning. It boasts up to 320 miles of range with the available extended-range battery, and it can sprint from 0-60 mph in under four seconds. We expand on the fun-to-drive nature of the Lightning in our full review.
As for its truck-like capabilities, the F-150 Lightning has some impressive specs. It can tow up to 10,000 pounds and has a maximum payload rating of 2,000 pounds. A Mega Power Frunk, a drainable 14.1-cubic-foot trunk under the hood at the front of the truck, further adds to this truck’s utility. The frunk can carry up to 400 pounds.
The Latest Technology
Electric vehicles are often technological marvels on wheels, and the Ford F-150 Lightning is no exception. On top of the dual-motor electric powertrain, the Lightning has many tech features inside and out that make it one of the most high-tech vehicles in the Ford lineup.
A few of our favorite available features include the SYNC 4A system, Phone as a Key, the FordPass app, and multiple Bang & Olufsen audio systems. SYNC 4A comes with a 15.5-inch touchscreen, navigation, and smartphone connectivity. We also like the standard Mega Power Frunk, which has four 120-volt power outlets, two USB ports, and an available 240-volt outlet in the bed for more serious power.
The Ford Co-Pilot360 safety tech suite is standard on every F-150 Lightning. The standard system has features like automatic emergency braking and automatic high beams. Upgrades include lane-keep assist and the BlueCruise semi-autonomous driving system, allowing hands-free driving on 97% of controlled access highways across the U.S. and Canada.
Diverse Model Range
Some electric pickup trucks have prohibitively high price tags, but the model range of the F-150 Lightning has four distinct trims that make it attainable for many drivers. The base Pro model is reasonably affordable, with a price tag close to a regular full-size crew cab pickup with similar features. The mid-range XLT trim adds excellent creature comforts and an optional extended-range battery.
The new Flash trim slots between the XLT and Lariat trims. This tech-focused truck comes standard with the Extended Range battery pack and features like a 15.5-inch touchscreen, a B&O audio system, and BlueCruise hands-free driving.
The Lariat trim adds some extra luxury with premium leather seating and a twin-panel moonroof. The top Platinum trim is a loaded luxury pickup truck with Nirvana massaging leather seats, 22-inch wheels, and a 14-speaker sound system.
Ford has done an excellent job applying the variety people love in the F-150 model range to the electric Lightning model.
