The 2020 Hyundai Palisade is a safe, spacious, comfortable three-row midsize SUV that can easily seat seven or eight passengers. It’s one of the best values in its segment, with a starting price that’s less than $33,000. At that starting price, you get an impressive roster of standard tech and safety equipment, as well as a responsive V6 engine. It’s also a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick, meaning that the 2020 Palisade is among the safest vehicles available. When it comes to practicality, the Palisade checks all the right boxes. It takes the idea of the family car and adds a helping of elegance and modern technology in a safe, value-packed SUV.
Safety comes standard
The Palisade comes in three trim levels: the least-expensive SE, the midrange SEL, and the top-of-the-line Limited. And even with the $32,895 SE, features such as forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, rear occupant alert, reverse parking distance warning, and trailer sway control come standard. That’s in addition to the seven standard airbags, which cover the third row and include a driver knee bag.
Move up to the SEL, and you add blind-spot collision avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist. This feature won’t let a passenger step out from the second row onto the road if another vehicle is approaching from behind. When the radar-based system determines there’s a car coming, the rear door stays locked until the car has passed.
For peace of mind when the weather gets rough, all-wheel drive is available with all trim levels for $1,700. And for peace of mind for the duration of your time owning the vehicle, every Palisade comes with Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Where practicality and elegance meet
The Palisade’s interior uses quality materials and pleasant color combinations. It offers options such as quilted Nappa leather and woodgrain accents. You can also choose second-row captain’s chairs with cooled seats, and a 60/40-split power-folding third row. There’s an optional 10.25-inch touch screen with navigation and a 630-watt, 12-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system. If you opt for the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, you’ll benefit from a blind-spot monitor. It’s activated when you use the turn signal and shows a camera view of the blind spot on that side of the vehicle.
However, don’t let the upscale amenities fool you: at its core, this is a wonderfully practical vehicle. As we explained in our Expert Review: “Passenger space is abundant, even in the third row, where an average adult male can sit in reasonable comfort. Helping apportion passenger space are highly adjustable sliding and reclining second-row seats, offered as a bench or captain’s chairs. Unlike many SUVs, the Palisade provides a generous 18 cubic feet of storage behind the third row.”
Those second-row seats use a handy one-touch system that makes it especially easy to get into and out of the vehicle. And when the kiddos are tuckered out after a family outing, the standard rear seat quiet mode lets the front passengers listen to music and shuts off the rear speakers so the kids can get some ZZZs.
Space, comfort, and confidence – all at a value price
One of the most impressive things about the Palisade is that it delivers elegant practicality at a reasonable price. You don’t have to get the top trim level to get advanced safety or tech features. Even niceties such as Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, seven USB ports, and an 8-inch screen come standard. However, even if you did go all-out, a top-of-the-line Palisade would run in the mid-$40,000s, reasonable in the three-row midsize SUV segment.
That mix of thoughtful touches, expansive list of safety features, and upscale luxury at a value price make the Palisade an appealing, easy-to-recommend family car.
