Set to bow at the Geneva Auto Show, the Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE offers a look at the next generation of VW’s slick CC model. This striking 5-door liftback is slightly larger than the current CC and packaged in a way that positions it above the present vehicle. The exterior of the Sport Coupe Concept GTE displays styling cues from VW’s new “progressive design language” also found on VW’s Cross Coupe GTE Concept that debuted in January in Detroit. However, in the case of the Sport Coupe Concept GTE, the edgier fascia/lighting treatments and prominent wheel arches set off with an elegant, sweeping roofline that recalls the Audi A7. We could see a production CC based on this one-off hit the road in late 2016 as a 2017 model.

Beyond these images, Volkswagen provided a few other intriguing tidbits about the drivetrain. Built on the company’s latest MQB modular platform architecture, the Sport Coupe Concept GTE is fitted with an advanced plug-in hybrid system that matches a 4-cylinder turbocharged TSI engine up front with a pair of electric motors – one at each axle like the setup used on the Cross Coupe GTE Concept. Total system output of this highly efficient AWD package is reported to be in the neighborhood of 300 horsepower. While no mention was made of its interior, we suspect many of the high-tech touches found inside the Cross Coupe GTE Concept will turn up here as well. We’ll have the full story when the wraps come off next week.
