UPDATE: See how this concept’s design translates to the production 2020 Hyundai Sonata

Hyundai revealed a show car called the Le Fil Rouge at Geneva saying that the concept points towards a new design direction for the Korean automaker. Also known as the HDC-1, Le Fil Rouge is French for common thread, which means elements of the exercise will be seen in all the company’s future vehicles.

Despite the size and upscale appearance of Le Fil Rouge, Hyundai made it clear that the concept represents that mainstream make’s future design philosophy and doesn’t mean the brand will be heading upmarket or that any of the design elements seen here will be used by its sister luxury division, Genesis.

“Le Fil Rouge is a reinterpretation of Hyundai’s design DNA that originated from the brand’s historical Hyundai Coupe Concept in 1974,” said Luc Donckerwolke, head of Hyundai’s Design Center. “Building on our long history of creating distinctive and sporty character in vehicles, we will open a new era for Hyundai design.” He added that the latest look incorporates a philosophy of “Sensuous Sportiness,” an approach that can be applied across the board, from sedans to SUVs. It also seeks to harmonize four basic elements in design: proportion, architecture, styling, and technology.

Proportion is key

Le Fil Rouge’s proportions are balanced by using a long wheel base, large wheels and short overhangs. A generous dash to axle ratio–the distance from front wheel center to base of windshield–provides a comfortable driving position, while a teardrop roofline gives the vehicle a sporty feel thanks to a roof and its front and rear pillars that are seamlessly blended into the vehicle’s silhouette. That makes Le Fil Rouge appear as though it is drawn with a single line.

The interior design also creates separate zone for the driver and passengers. That means a driver-oriented cockpit on one side, and more generous legroom on the passenger side and rear seat. A wrap-around approach to the dash emphasizes depth, creating a calm, spacious and comfortable travel environment for everyone inside.

The concept also previews a new approach to the face of Hyundai vehicles, using a layered front hood and building on the recently introduced cascading grille seen on the 2019 Santa Fe and Nexo. Like the Le Fil Rouge, all Hyundai grilles will get a three-dimensional treatment, with jeweled facets.
