Making its debut in Geneva, the Hyundai FE Fuel Cell Concept reflects what Woong Chul Yang, vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Company calls “an important evolution of our pioneering hydrogen leadership.” He added that “It moves us closer to our vision for a ‘Hydrogen Society’, where transportation is clean, efficient and enhances the lives of our customers.” It’s part of the firm’s eco-vehicle program slated to introduce at least 14 new, environmentally-focused models by 2020. Elements of the FE one-off will influence a new SUV Fuel Cell model set to launch sometime next year, a vehicle that also will feature “Hyundai Smart Sense” driver-assist technologies.

Lighter, more powerful fuel cell
The FE–for Future Eco—Fuel Cell Concept introduces Hyundai’s fourth generation hydrogen fuel cell technology. Hyundai says compared to the current Gen II system used in its Tucson ix30 Fuel Cell SUV, this latest iteration is 20 percent lighter and 10 percent more efficient. Equally important, the power density of the stack itself has been upped by 30 percent, which will yield significantly greater real-world range. Hyundai currently is projecting it will be able to travel over 500 miles between refueling.
Beyond those direct benefits, the new FE Fuel Cell Concept boasts several other enhancements, starting with a new internal air humidifier system that recycles water emitted by the fuel cell to make for a more comfortable cabin environment. The car also features portable battery packs charged by the vehicle to power various personal electronic devices of the passengers and a trunk with a dedicated storage/charging bay for a mini electric scooter.

Look of tomorrow
Hyundai says the clean, flowing exterior of the FE Fuel Cell Concept embodies a minimalist character inspired by nature and water. Its aerodynamic lines and contours are complemented by strategically positioned vents to aid cooling and an integrated spoiler on the liftgate. Inside the cabin of this pillarless exercise features individual seating for four. A large, main digital dash displaying navigation information extends to the center of the dash while a second screen on the console handles infotainment.
