79% of EVs Registered in the U.S. Last Year were Teslas

Of the five best-selling electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States last year, four were Teslas. Tesla only sells four models.

According to a new report from Automotive News and Experian, fully 79 percent of the EVs registered in the U.S. in 2020 were Teslas.

The Tesla Model 3 easily led all electric cars, with 95,135 new registrations. The Model Y came in second, with 71,344. GM’s Chevy Bolt compact hatchback showed a distant third, with 19,664.  The pricier Tesla Model X SUV came in fourth, with 19,652. And Tesla’s flagship Model S sedan closed out the top five, with 14,430.

As impressive as the feat is, Tesla is unlikely to repeat it. Most automakers plan to introduce new electric models to the U.S. this year, dramatically increasing Tesla’s competition.
