2012 Chevrolet Sonic – An Aveo by any other name

Despite all of its pre-arrival buildup — including showing a concept version in cool RS form — the name of Chevrolet’s upcoming compact model has long been a point of internal contention. The automaker has now confirmed that the car formerly known as the Aveo will arrive next year as the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. In making the announcement, Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet U.S. Marketing, noted that: “The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name. The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about.”

Chevrolet Sonic nomenclature will be used in Canada and Mexico as well as in the United States. In the other 50-plus countries where it’s sold, the car will continue to carry the Aveo name. The 2012 Chevrolet Aveo will be built in Michigan at GM’s newly upgraded Orion Assembly plant. It’s expected to make a formal debut at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month and be available in both three-door and five-door hatchback body styles when it does go on sale.
