Used 2022 Honda Passport

The Honda Passport name was re-introduced for the 2019 model year as a more rugged counterpart to the family-friendly Pilot. The Passport is mechanically and aesthetically similar to the Ridgeline, with the big difference being that it’s a 5-passenger SUV rather than a pickup. It shares its robust standard V6 engine with several other Honda models, which has a proven reputation as a strong, efficient, and reliable engine.

The 2022 Honda Passport gets a few rugged updates. For starters, the styling has been revised to look more like the recently updated Honda Ridgeline. Also, like the Ridgeline, new HPD accessories are available for the Passport to add more personality.

Another big update is the addition of the TrailSport model. Honda says this is the first entry in the new TrailSport sub-brand, focusing on rugged off-road styling. Unfortunately, there are no mechanical upgrades to make it a better off-roader, but Honda has hinted that greater off-road capability will be introduced in future model years.

The Honda Passport competes in the 2-row midsize crossover SUV class. The Grand Cherokee is the strongest off-roader in this class, but the Passport strikes a nice balance between off-road competence and on-road comfort.

As you might expect from a Honda crossover, the Honda Passport has an agreeable, car-like drive. It’s smooth, quiet, and comfortable, making it drive like a minivan more than an off-road SUV, which is a good thing if you’ll spend most of your time on the pavement.

The trusty 3.5-liter V6 under the hood of the Passport is the same one that powers the Honda Pilot SUV, Ridgeline midsize truck, and Odyssey minivan. It delivers smooth and confident power that’s easily managed through a 9-speed automatic transmission.

Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive (AWD) is optional on EX-L but standard on Elite and TrailSport. This torque-vectoring AWD system improves the all-weather traction of the Passport and enhances its off-road capabilities. It’s not as serious of an off-roader as the 4WD variants of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota 4Runner, but the Passport is up for some mild off-road adventures.

The Honda Passport is a 2-row/5-passenger midsize crossover SUV, which means it has more space than a compact crossover like the Honda CR-V. That also means it’s a bit smaller than a 3-row midsize SUV like the Honda Pilot. That makes it just-right-sized for drivers who want a crossover with a roomy interior for passengers and cargo but don’t need three rows of seats.

This interior is upscale and uses excellent materials, especially in the upper trims. This is part of the reason the Passport is on the pricey side of this segment. With the 2022 facelift, the EX-L trim gets perforated leather seating and contrast seating. The new TrailSport model has a unique interior with orange contrast stitching, TrailSport embroidery in the front headrests, a distinct gauge cluster, and amber ambient lighting.

The Passport has roomy, comfortable seating in both rows. It also has impressive cargo space with over 50 cubic feet behind the back seats and over 100 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. There’s also a handy underfloor storage system with a spare tire and components for odds and ends like a first aid kit, water bottles, or whatever else you want to bring on your adventure.

The exterior of the Honda Passport is updated for 2022. The styling is new from the windshield forward, and it’s highlighted by a larger grille with a chain-link mesh.

The Passport used to look like a moodier version of the Pilot with more dark trim, but now it comes across more like a Ridgeline pickup. There’s a definite truck-like aesthetic, and the Passport looks even more rugged in the new TrailSport trim with its unique appearance package.

The size of the Honda Passport is similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Blazer, and Toyota 4Runner. It’s slotted between the compact CR-V and the 3-row Pilot in the Honda lineup.

The 2022 Honda Passport comes with a generous list of standard features. Standard features include a 280-horsepower V6 engine, LED headlights, push-button start, an 8-inch infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, tri-zone automatic climate control, Intelligent Traction Management, a power liftgate, an under-floor cargo storage area, and 60/40 split-folding back seats.

The standard Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance tech features includes automatic emergency braking with forward collision warning, lane-keep assist, road departure mitigation with lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Rear seat reminder and rear seatbelt reminder are new standard safety features for 2022.

Because the Sport model has been discontinued for 2022, the base Honda Passport is now the EX-L, which is remarkably well equipped. Standard fare on this comfortable 5-seat SUV includes leather upholstery, a power moonroof, and 20-inch alloy wheels.

The new TrailSport trim gives the Passport the appearance of an off-roader, but unfortunately, it doesn’t come with any mechanical upgrades to improve its off-road performance. The grille, the wheels, and the front and rear fascias are all unique to the TrailSport along with orange “TrailSport” badging. The front and rear track widths are increased by 10 mm for slightly greater stability and a wider stance

In Elite trim, the 2022 Passport elevates the luxury quotient even more with unique 20-inch alloy wheels, a hands-free power liftgate, a heated steering wheel, heated and vented front seats, and heated rear outboard seats.

Besides some upgraded paint options and AWD for the EX-L, perhaps the most notable option on the 2022 Honda Passport is the HPD (Honda Performance Development) appearance package. It adds a unique grille, black fender flares, bespoke wheels (in gold or black), and HPD graphics on the rear quarter panels.

The sole engine powering the Honda Passport is a tried-and-true 3.5-liter V6. This engine has a proven record for reliability and it strikes a satisfying balance of power and efficiency. Several rivals to the Passport have a standard 4-cylinder engine that’s more efficient, but the Passport’s fuel economy rating is about average for a V6 in this class.

A 9-speed automatic transmission comes standard on every Passport. It does an excellent job delivering quick and smooth shifts that you’ll barely notice.

The Passport has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. That’s enough muscle to tow a small camper, a fishing boat, a couple of ATVs, and much more.
