"2nd Neon we've owned. The first was a 95 automatic that I gave to my nephew when it hit 120k. He's still driving the thing as it approaches 220k. Our 2nd Neon is an 05 model with a 5 speed. My wife bought this for the mileage, but found out she didn't like shifting - much to the delight of our son. He gets to take it to college next year. I think this car is a little too low. Hard for an old guy like me to get in and out, but younger people like my son don't see a problem. I think the 5 speed version is really fun to drive. It seems amazingly powerful for an economy car and it does get noticeably better mileage than our automatic got. I don't think I've ever seen mileage below 32mpg with the 5 speed. My son has a different opinion of the power. He says we should have bought an SRT4 model instead. I'm not sure what an SRT4, but this one has more than enough power for anyone - especially a teenager. If you're looking for economical and reliable transportation that is also fun to drive, it is hard to go wrong with one of these. When we bought our 05 model, it was the last year for this model. The dealer discounted $6k off the sticker bringing the new off the lot price down to 11k. When I wrote this review, I was checking the blue book value to see if it was time to drop the collision insurance yet. I was astounded to see the average retail for a 3 year old model is still almost the same price we paid for a new one 3 years ago. Of course, I wouldn't expect to sell the car for that value, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how little this car depreciated. The bad news was I still have to pay collision insurance on a car used by a teenager. Can't have everything I guess. Too bad they discontinued this model instead of updating it. It really was a very nice car. It just fell a bit behind the times."

"I have had the car since 2002, bought it new. Its at 180000 miles as of April 10 2008. I have changed the oil, belts, ie basic maint and thats it. Mines a five speed SXT, with Yokahoma TRZ tires I get about 35 mpg at 70 mph. Not bad for a car pushing 200,000 miles. I find it funny that consumer reports and the rest of the industry knock these little cars, Dodge had a winner in the Neon, shame they don't make them anymore."
