Even though sales of certified pre-owned cars and trucks were off by about 10 percent in 2009, they still grew in relation to new vehicle sales, which were down 21 percent. Attractive to buyers, manufacturers and dealers alike, we expect CPO growth to continue. Here we highlight some of 2009's standout certified pre-owned programs.
A mix of best-selling mainstream and premium brands, here are the most popular certified pre-owned cars overall:
| Toyota | 265,887 |
| Chevrolet | 200,694 |
| Honda | 162,541 |
| BMW | 114,423 |
| Ford | 112,308 |
| Mercedes-Benz | 71,886 |
| Nissan | 68,182 |
| Lexus | 62,807 |
| Volkswagen | 43,892 |
| Acura | 39,654 |
(In compiling these next two lists, we discounted low-volume brands and those with extreme drops in 2009 new vehicle sales.)
If you look at certified pre-owned sales in relation to a carmaker's new-car sales, it's easy to see that CPO is especially popular among buyers of premium brands:
| BMW | 58% |
| Jaguar | 43% |
| Mercedes-Benz | 38% |
| Acura | 38% |
| Volvo | 37% |
| Audi | 34% |
| Porsche | 33% |
| Cadillac | 29% |
| Lexus | 29% |
| Buick | 23% |
And here are 2009's fastest-growing certified pre-owned programs, again in relation to the brand's new vehicle sales. For example, Infiniti CPO sales more than doubled in relation to Infiniti new-car sales, from 6% in 2008 to 14% in 2009.
| Infiniti | 123% |
| Hyundai | 69% |
| Kia | 50% |
| Lexus | 44% |
| Acura | 42% |
| Nissan | 39% |
| BMW | 39% |
| Subaru | 36% |
| Jaguar | 35% |
| Porsche | 35% |
| Mercedes-Benz | 31% |
