First Look: 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo

Fitted with its first all-new engine in 35 years, the 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo will bow in at the Frankfurt Auto Show next month in Coupe and Cabriolet form. Visually differentiated by larger front air intakes and LED front running lights/taillamps the latest incarnation of this high-performance all-wheel-drive icon will be fitted with a 3.8-liter force-fed and intercooled flat-six that makes 500 horsepower -- 20 more than the 3.6-liter used in its predecessor -- and 501 lb-ft of torque, a huge 41 count bump in that pavement-churning commodity. Fortified with direct fuel injection, a GT2 expansion-type intake manifold that provides additional charge cooling and Porsche's response-enhancing variable turbo geometry (VTG), the new Turbo not only offers more exhilarating performance, it produces 18 percent less CO2 emissions, although Porsche has yet to release any formal EPA numbers for either model.

While its standard transmission remains the carryover six-speed manual, Porsche finally will offer the 2010 Turbo with its slick seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automated manual that changes gears at the touch of a steering wheel-mounted button. Better still, the firm also will let buyers opt for new, Formula One-style paddles. The combo will take either the coupe or convertible from 0-60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds -- in 3.2 ticks on cars fitted with the PDK trans and optional Sport Chrono Package -- and on to a top end of 194 mph. In addition to raising peak torque to 516 lb.-ft, and bringing its host of performance contouring/recording capabilities, the Sport Chrono kit also nets "dynamic" engine mounts from the GT3 that use magnetic fluid to automatically adjust ride quality for comfort or sport. Beyond that, a newly available Porsche Torque Vectoring package with a limited-slip rear differential can further tweak the formidable capabilities of the Turbo's standard Traction Management (PTM) and Stability Management (PSM) systems. The new 911 Turbo will go on sale in the U.S. in January, with the Coupe starting at $132,800 and the Cabriolet opening at $143,800.
