What Is Shift-by-Wire? 

Any transmission design in which gear selection is entirely electronic and there is no mechanical connection between the gear selector and the transmission is shift-by wire. Most modern automatic and continuously variable transmissions are shift-by-wire designs. See also drive-by-wire.
