What Are Running Boards?

Running boards are narrow platforms attached to the vehicle’s underside running from the front to the back wheel that help a person more easily enter or exit a vehicle with higher ground clearance.

Vehicles built early in the 20th century sported running boards due to their higher ride height. Today, you’ll usually find running boards on larger sport-utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and vans.

Running boards are typically made of aluminum or steel, although custom applications are made of various materials. Rubber or non-skid strips are often attached to boards to provide traction if the board is wet.

Traditional running boards have fixed mountings; however, power running boards extend from under the vehicle when needed and then retract once the vehicle is in motion. Luxury vehicles may feature power running boards.

Though running boards generally act as a way to make it easier to access a vehicle, these accessories may perform other functions, including protection from dirt, rocks, or other debris from hitting the bottom of the vehicle. Many owners add running boards for cosmetic purposes.

Most people call them running boards, but they’re also called side steps, nerf bars, and other names.
