Fog lights or fog lamps are auxiliary illumination sources separate from headlights, typically mounted beneath the front bumper. The lower positioning of the fog lights allows their beams to light up the road underneath the fog layer. Fog lights increase the driver’s ability to see the road and traffic in dense fog and tend to work best in isolation, independently of the headlights.
Fog lights are available in white and yellow lamps.
Not all vehicles are equipped with fog lights. They are an optional feature on some models if offered at all. Aftermarket fog lamps are available and can be installed on any vehicle that lacks them.
Due to EU regulations, some vehicles, mainly those from European makes, even have rear fog lights. See also adaptive headlights, automatic high-beam headlights, and automatic windshield wipers.
