The EPA is the Environmental Protection Agency, an independent agency of the U.S. government that is part of the executive branch. Established by President Nixon in 1970, the EPA has responsibilities for many environmental issues, but concerning transportation, the EPA is most recognized for testing and rating motor vehicle fuel economy in terms of miles per gallon (mpg) of gasoline, diesel, or flex fuel, and MPGe for electric vehicles.
