Positive Review
...'cause when the sun dies and the earth is a burned-out husk, my '85 Volvo will still be drivable. It's ugly. It's slow. Kelley Blue Book doesn't even evaluate cars this old. But after two serious accidents and a quarter of a million miles, it's got a straight frame, gets 25 miles a gallon on the original engine and transmission, turns on a dime (well, okay, on some kind of large archaic Swedish coin), and has never, never, ever let me down. The Time Machine ain't a Delorean, it's an old blue Volvo sedan. It's a big ugly dog that slobbers, but it will love you forever...and in a pinch it will save your life. In other words, she ain't heavy, she's my Volvo.
Critical Review
I have not been one of the lucky ones with my 1991 240DL. I bought it in the spring of '04 and had to replace the clutch within about 3 months. This was no big deal. It's a stick, these things happen. It was the electrical problems that were already starting to become a pain. I drove it from Cali to Ohio in August of '04 and found if I tried to charge my cell phone while playing the radio I'd blow a fuse. Okay. Then, I got to Ohio and discovered that winter that the heat worked about as well as the air conditioner. That is to say, hardly at all. Hightailed it back to California in Jan '05 with a glove box full of fuses (the winter clime caused them to blow at random) and somewhere in New Mexico the "check engine" light came on. No one figured how to get it off until a few months ago when I had to have some kind of engine mount or cap or something replaced. Every time I'd come to a stop, the car would quietly cut off. That cost $450 bucks to fix. About 2 months before that I paid almost $500 to have the exhaust system replaced. These shell outs were cheap compared to last year's expenditure: a new computer that ran $1200 and took about a month in the repair shop. Car's in the shop now, too. Alternator's sucking the brand new battery dry. Add the cost of AAA tows (my mechanics are outside the free tow range) and I've probably put more than $3500 in a car I only paid 5k for. Oh, and it didn't pass smog, not two years ago and not this year, so only God knows how much I'm looking at if I want to keep it on the road. I don't. I want to sell it and get a Toyota, ASAP. It's too bad because I've always loved the look of this car and how great it is on gas.

Almost everything else.
Performance and Styling.
This wagon is barebones, but it’ll last forever, like the 1998 Honda Prelude Type SH I am selling. It inconveniences me, though, since the size is large for New Jersey.
eye catching, reliable, safe, simple, classic
they're old. the plastic interior cracks.
I know, she's old. But she's reliable and beautiful. These bricks will go forever if you find and make friends with a great mechanic. They're cult classics. Every commercial/movie/TV show wanting to be cool? Will have a brick Volvo classic in it..mine is white and will be featured in a few soon. She pays for herself. They're safe and heavy.
Its a platform for everything
Its old and breaks
They have alot of problems and you will get to know your machanic, but that is just part of the fun. Ive delivered pizza in one, daily drove 100 for work in one, drove out of state every week with another, and did alot of wiring on all of them. They are quality units but the wiring harnesses, blower motors, lights, engine mounts, manual transmissions, and odometers usually have problems. They have some really good brakes and handling characteristics but lack the speed.
Reliable
Plastic interior pieces will crack over time.
The b230f engine is reliable and easy to work on. The cloth seats are very comfortable. The plastic interior pieces will break apart over time.
Solid feel, easy to drive, reliable, comfortable
Plastic parts in cabin that can crack over time
We bought the 1993 240 sedan used and from a dealer when our son got his driver's license. Our daughter took it over three years later when she got her license, then I drove it for awhile and told my kids that it almost drives itself which they found hilarious. My husband drove it a couple of times and found that the inside heater is awesome on cold mornings because it heated up much faster than his car. Our daughter re-borrowed it for a year when she was between cars, but I'm the main driver now. It could use a paint job and I'm about to upgrade the stereo system, but I don't mind an occasional repair bill and so far it still smogs fine. Overall I love this car.
Stylish, drives so comfortably
Slow and steady, you will be addicted to them
I have owned 2 Volvo 240's , They are super comfortable to drive. Hearty and reliable. They all have quirks but so stylish. Repairs were always cheap and easy to do. Convert to an electric cooling fan, upgrade the AC Perfect car.
Great Value fun to drive
no cup holders
I bought this car a year ago and have not experienced any big problems I had to only replace a fuel pump relay that cost $12.00 on line at IPD USA. The seats are made of quality material and still look new the exterior is holding up well. great gas mileage with a consistant 24 to 25 mpg city and a respectful 26 to 28 mpg highway. This car is very easy to park with its tight turning radius and great visibility(no real blind spots) There is lots of head room and a good amount of leg room the controls are easy to reach and understand. Very large trunk. replacement parts are cheaper than average and available at just about any auto parts store. engine mechanics are pretty simple. (easy to work on) Built like a tank (very safe) I paid just $1,100.00 for it. (great value) I have parked my 06 chevy aveo and my 07 chevy impala and drive my volvo 240 everyday. By the way this is coming fron a 50 year old well established person.
I have owned this car for 2 years and I am never going to sell it. Its simple and cheap to maintain and never ever quits on me. Its also built like an army truck. Other than the fact that the engine is under-powered, there is very little to fault with. Some of the plastics are a bit tacky though. Yet it will hold its own no matter what. Love it!
