Positive Review
I've owned and worked on these cars for several years now and am absolutely in love. For S&G I will break down my review. Value: 4/5. Can get them for a few grand in great condition, but being as comparatively rare as they are, parts can get pricey, especially stock. Reliability: 4/5. These cars are old, so you can't fault them too much for car-specific reliability. The head gasket is the ONLY issue due to low headbolt torque rating from the factory @ 54? ft lbs. If you get a rebuild done, DO NOT GO WITH STOCK TORQUE SPEC! AT LEAST 80 ft lbs with new stock bolts or preferrably ARP bolts. Quality: 5/5. Excellent fit and finish... which explains the high original MSRP. Performance: 4/5. Only docked it because at 6 psi, stock boost leaves much to be desired. A high-flow exhaust with cat and QUIET muffler bumped up to 10-12 psi produces 40-60 HP gains and still easily passes emissions. Styling: 5/5. Shouldn't even be an option to rate this... completely based on the person. No "facts" for styling ratings exist. Comfort: 5/5. Extremely comfortable. Power windows, seats, doors, mirrors, and 8? way adjustable seats + adjustable steering wheel AND suspension stiffness control amounts to the pinnacle of comfort... in your choice of cloth or leather seats. Stock suspension is also extremely forgiving.
Critical Review
First three years I owned this - three headgaskets. And Toyota refuses to admit they messed this one up. All the warranty fixes - two of them - they used the same OEM gasket that blew. Only fixed with HKS aftermarket gasket

still looks good runs good
needs some work and it is old
It's really a 1990 Supra with a targa top red I love the body style performance features the way it looks drives feels the color changed motor and trans lots of new parts, brakes have air leak just tired of spending money just bought new car
Fun to drive/maintain, Smooth, Powerful
Notorious for Blown Head gaskets
I bought this car from a dealership, it had been through 7 previous owners. One had managed to kill the engine. Originally the plan was to find a cheap car to learn stick with. However it escalated to a full engine rebuild of this car. It's been my daily driver since. There's a few kinks here and there, but it's far better than driving a Corolla.
fun to drive
cup holder placement
ive wanted one of these since i was 17 now i have one and its everything i thought it would be i love this car
As below, Toyota quality throughout, a proto-Lexus
While still contemporary, styling is stealthy
Very nice luxo-sport, handles like a 'vette (corvette, not chevette), gets 18-19 city and 24 highway, though I've gotten 17/27/24, haulage is surprisingly good but the back seat is for children, very comfortable driving position and power lumbar is a treat, overall well-designed ergonomics. Outside of regular maintenance, I have spent nothing on repairs, everything works like new, a bargain on the used market.
Bought new in '91 and has been my primary car for the past 19 years. No problems. None. Good mpg 19/24, fun to drive, good cargo room, comfortable, timeless styling, impressive performance. After all this time, it still drives like new. Unbelieveable car.
Top of the line Toyota even for being old. A car that is overlooked and at the same time very rare.
The 1989 Toyota Supra Turbo w/targa top is a great car and still in style. I would recommend any owner of this car with the 3.0 L engine keep a lookout on oil leakage around the head gaskets. Just keep a checkup on the engine and have the service done and you should be able to get a lot of very good service from the vehicle. The Supra w/turbo has power and performance when needed and holds the road well at high speeds; very little wind noise. A very well built car. The automatic transmission is great! Reasonable gas milage for the performance of the car.
I love my car more then anything...i own a 92 teal turbo targa 5 speed with the shadow grey interior. this car with the boost bumped up only 4 psi is a rocket...this car is way ahead of its time and still is.
