Review Summary

AI summary of user-generated reviews for this vehicle
The midsize SUV offers a reliable, versatile, and comfortable ride. It has a powerful engine, spacious interior, and smooth handling. However, some common issues include a small fuel tank, excessive road noise, and problems with the navigation system and driver assistance features. While generally a positive ownership experience, some customers feel the higher trim levels are necessary to get the full package of desirable features.

"Beware Don't be fooled"

I purchased a 2020 Toyota Highlander Platinum. Love the vehicle so far. Rides great and has lots of safety equipment. One major problem that Toyota does not want you to know. The Platinum and Limited will not accept a tow hitch from factory or after market. Seems that they installed some sensors for the foot control of the lift gate in the area where the hitch would be installed. I contacted Toyota to see what could be changed to allow the hitch to be installed. They said they were sorry nothing can be done . You have to purchase an XLE model if you want a hitch. I cannot believe that they won't make some engr. change to enable a hitch installation.

"A/c issues!"

BUYER BEWARE!!! I've had this car for 4 months. One of which has been spent in the shop. A pebble less than a centimeter hit the a/c condenser and destroyed it. There have been multiple reports of this happening and since it's not a "safety concern" they won't recall it. It has nothing behind the grill and bumper to protect against road damage. Just 3 inch gaps in the bumper and grill where anything can go through. They refuse to fix it and we had to go through insurance. I have a $500 deductible. They won't even cover that claiming "insurance fraud". I already spoke to my insurance and they said it was between the dealer and I. So just know, if you buy this car, you're risking spending 100s of dollar on fixing something that is a design flaw.

Toyota never breaks down

I own a 2020 Toyota Highland XLE AWD. I am blown away by the fact that we bought this car new. And I still have the original front brakes and rotors on it with 66,000 miles on it. I have reg maintence done like oil changes, tire rotations, alignments. And the brakes are still in great shape. It runs like a dream,27mpg, awesome V6 power. No issues here at all. Between my wife and I we have owned 2006 Toyota Rav4 limited awd, a 2011 Toyota Camry v6 XLE, a 2015 Toyota Camry XSE V6, a 2018 Toyota Rav4 XLE AWD, a 2019 Toyota Corolla XSE, a 2020 AWD Highlander AWD V6, and a 2021 Toyota Highlandet Limited V6 AWD. We both love the brand. They never break down. Just do your maintence regularly and enjoy your purchase like we have.. OH WHAT A FEELING TO DRIVE, "TOYOTA" !!!

This toyota highlander xle

This model is not up to the standards of my 2012 Toyota highlander. I would recommend avoiding this make. Toyota does NOT stand behind its product. Even with an extended warranty, any trim is not covered. Plastic around the windshield deteriorated at 25000 miles and Toyota said that's not their fault that the plastic was inferior. So, I guess it is my fault. I will not buy another Toyota even though my last 3 SUVs were Toyotas. They do not stand behind their Complimentary Service at 5,000 miles. They charged me for my oil. Complimentary means free in my dictionary. I drive fewer than 10,000 miles per year so when i went for the next Comp Service at 10,000 miles it too was not complimentary. The Comp Oil Change cost $89. The vehicle is noisy, loose fitting, interior is inferior, though mpg is a bit better than my old one which had 159,000 miles on it when traded. I recommend that you look else where.

Awesome car! Longest lasting, lowest maintenance
Pros

Everything but the price, so I saved tons and bought w/ private seller.

Cons

None. Love the low maintenance & 25 mpg being its fwd.

After much research and test drives, I landed at wanting a highlander with a v6 engine. The 4 cyl with turbo had a lag when trying to change lanes or make a turn, which is unsafe and very frustrating. I would guess it could only have gotten worse with time like my Jeep did. The v6 is powerful, responsive, and the inside is wonderful with space and versatility for hauling and driving many kids. At first I wanted the bench seat, but the buckets won in the end for long drives and comfort for kids being too old to lay down or be in a carrier. The cars last forever I’ve heard. The light gray interior doesn’t burn my legs like a black interior. I avoid dark cars due to the heat. Very happy with that. Also, the seats with little holes in the fabric (on leather and premium models for ac seats) really sticks. Dirt food grime gets in that fabric and you can’t even get it out. If I can’t, who can, I’m a trained fabric Re-weaver. Unless you will never eat, have dirt, or pets, or kids in the car, I’d say avoid that fabric. V6 can tow too. I wouldn’t tow with the 4cyl. People reported it felt lagging and felt like it was damaging the engine. As a mechanic type person I just don’t trust the turbo. My Camry v6 w turbo 2013 was great. But a bigger car with a tiny engine and turbo? It totally lagged.

Good all around vehicle
Pros

Comfortable in 1st and 2nd row, features, cargo space

Cons

Auto-start stop, engine idle, not quieter than older generations

The 2024 Highlander is an excellent midsize SUV. Infotainment screen, customizable gauge cluster, and heads-up-display on the Platinum take some time to learn but once you do they are very good. Leather seats are comfortable and build quality is solid. Turbo I4 drives nicely. When idling it constantly raises RPM and gets louder. No problems after 1 year and 10k miles, although I doubt the powertrain will last as long as the old V6. Nonetheless you can expect it to be more reliable than any competitors. Auto start-stop is annoying and useless in most situations. Safety features work well. Overall a great vehicle.

No hitch

Just bought a week ago- lots of great features in the Limited model we got. Love the AC seats, but wish it had come with a factory installed towing package.

2023 Toyota Highlander AWD XLE

Bought our 2023 Highlander AWD XLE in April 2023. Live in the Chicago area. Have driven it loaded with bikes, kayak and Tule roof box to Arizona and Maine. Great traveling vehicle with great ride and good gas mileage (27 miles per gallon). Largest vehicle we have ever purchased. Meets our needs well. We have two other vehicles, sedan and Miata which we drive in the city because parking spots are smaller making parking the Highlander a bit of a challenge. Have owned 3 previous SUVs and we like the Highlander the best. We have had zero technical issues with the vehicle. I would recommend it to anyone wanting a reliable midsized SUV.

Deprecation Value Dropping Fast
Pros

None

Cons

Overpriced, Resale value, Reliability

Does not hold it's value very well. The v-6 is one of the biggest problems. Not many people looking for a suv with a v6 now days. Costly repairs, exspensive for maintenance. Not very comfortable on long road trips. We traded our vehicle for a new truck that holds a better value.
