2026 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Consumer Reviews

I bought a new gas Toyota Grand Highlander limited. At 58,000 miles a whine emerged. The transmission was deemed needing to be replaced. Toyota 8-speed transmissions apparently are notorious for defects. Barely made it under the powertrain warranty. Would have cost 12k if I had not. Looking to exit modern Toyota brand. It appears they know this transmission is a problem across models and they are not correcting course. We love the vehicle. But the only reason we buy Toyota is for reliability and this as been severely compromised. I’ll keep my 2012 Tundra w 220k on it. But we’re dumping the Highlander before its next transmission fails. Do not buy—stay clear!

I am extremely disappointed with the way Toyota has handled a warranty issue with my new Toyota Grand Highlander, which I have owned for only 7 months. The radio/display screen in my vehicle is delaminating. I brought the vehicle to Toyota of Smithfield, and I was initially told that the screen would be replaced under warranty. I left believing that Toyota had acknowledged the problem and that the issue would be resolved. When I returned to have the replacement done, I was given a completely different answer. I was suddenly told that Toyota would not cover the replacement because the damage was supposedly my fault. This is incredibly frustrating and unacceptable. I did not damage the screen. I did not abuse the vehicle, modify the screen, or do anything that would cause it to delaminate. If Toyota is going to deny a warranty claim by saying the customer caused the damage, then I believe they should be able to clearly explain what the customer supposedly did and provide evidence supporting that determination. Instead, I was initially told the screen would be replaced, only to have that decision reversed later. I have owned this vehicle for only seven months. This is a new vehicle, and I purchased a Toyota expecting the company and its dealerships to stand behind their products. I should not have to fight with a dealership over a defective display in a vehicle that is barely seven months old. I have now escalated this matter to Toyota Customer Relations and am requesting that Toyota's regional management review the dealership's decision and the reason the warranty determination was changed. I sincerely hope Toyota corporate will step in and resolve this appropriately. I am not asking for special treatment—I am asking Toyota to stand behind the vehicle I purchased and honor the warranty for a problem I did not cause. Toyota of Smithfield: this is not the level of customer service I expected when purchasing a new Toyota. I hope someone at Toyota takes the time to review what happened here and makes this right.

Incredible value for a family SUV. Fits 4 comfortably with cargo space for a full cart Costco run. Gets 35-37 mpg consistently with a 500 mile range. The 12 gallon gas tank is actually a nice benefit at the pump.

This has been great car, so far I put 36k miles on it, two issues. Gas tank size is not as stated in the manual. It is 14.8 gallons and not 17.8 gallons. I tested that multiple times, it is annoying that I have to fill the tank more frequently than anticipated. Talked with dealer multiple times no answer. At some point they said it is a calibration issues with software then they said that they have no info regarding the issue. 2nd issue is that when I leave the cat for a week or ten days unused, odometer goes up by 10-15 miles without me performing an inch of driving. First time I thought that the parking people drove it around, 2nd time I left it at my garage at home with camera on and same thing happened, weird but that what happened. Other than that it is a five star vehicle.

We were considering a 3rd row SUV. We first looked at the Kia Telluride, it was nice but, it didn't have the options we were looking for at the dealership. We then looked at the Hyundai Palisade. It was super loaded with all kinds of bells and whistles but, we couldn't justify paying for options we really wouldn't use. The biggest issue was, we have purchased 5 new Toyotas and our guts spoke to the non-problematic ownership reliability. This brought us to look at the Grand Highlander. We originally looked at the Limited, full gas, 2.4 Liter with Turbo. We then looked at the Platinum. The ride is really nice for a SUV of this size, and it still comes loaded with options, most of which we will use. There is plenty of space inside! Adults can comfortably sit in all three rows! Cargo space is very large with the third row folded down. It's plentiful even with the third row not folded down! As far as what all the buttons do, YouTube was my best source of learning. There are a few options we could live without but that's with any vehicle. Power, interior comfort and quietness on the road is what the GH brings! We will be taking it on major road trips soon!

We have owned the GH for two months and are very pleased with the overall Performance including ride, acceleration, and roominess. The only negative is the actual MPG which is about 10-15% lower than the EPA estimates. We looked at the Lexus TX 350 but could not justify the $10K price difference. We also purchased the Toyota 7 year extended bumper to bumper warranty due to the technology features. Highly recommend the GH especially with the hybrid max option.

After researching a number of different 3rd Row Vehicles, we landed on this one for having the best practicality. While not the most flashy or sporty looking, it had the best blend of space, value, reliability, and comfort. It rivals a full-size SUV without the price tag, and the space of a minivan without, well, being a minivan. The interior is top-notch featuring captains chairs and a spacious 3rd row that can easily accommodate adults. Cargo space is tremendous, both with the 3rd row up and down, and there are various spaces to hold different gadgets such as ipads, books, phones, etc. all throughout the car, as well as usb outlets everywhere. The info screen is really big and well designed, and the center console is huge with multiple places of storage, including a wireless charging platform for your phone. Perhaps the biggest con with the XLE version are the wheels. They are pretty basic and bland and not sure why Toyota has 18" wheels that come standard on this particular version, considering the size of the vehicle. They do offer 20" wheels on the limited and platinum editions, but wasn't enough of a game changer to pay the additional 7-13k. All in all, the Toyota Grand Highlander is a sensational family vehicle with plenty of really nice amenities to enjoy, while not having to pay the expense of luxury and cringing as your kids trample all over it.

This car checks all the boxes for a decent sized suv. It’s a Toyota so it’s been reliable so far, and the service is always great. Downsides are that the car has a lot of road noise, and the interior is cheaply made. I find the regular Highlander I owned before was a much better “ride” and more fun to drive. The regular Highlander was just way too small for me. The grand is the perfect size. If Toyota can fix the road noise and have better quality interior I would give it 5 stars. I will probably look at the Lexus TX for my next car (supposedly the same as the grand Highlander but the luxury version)
