Positive Review
As soon as one realizes this is a micro car and not a mini size, it can be readily accepted as a daily driver with limitation, Its a fun to drive car although its quirky semi-automatic transmission can be challenging at times. Its great for a student or elderly retiree who just want to get from A to B in comfort. My 2008 has almost 70,000 miles on it and it has been pretty economical to run at about 37 mpg around town. Highway driving wont help the mileage more because because the aerodynamics are similar to a brick.. The limited rear space has never been an issue when we filled it with many grocery bags. . Being part of Mercedes, the parts may be expensive-- yet what isnt today. Its a fun car to drive and Ive never held up someone else on acceleration. Yes the ride can be bumpy because of the short wheelbase-- yet what other car is only 8ft 8inches long. Oh yes, its easier to get in and out of than many larger vehicles and its top speed will hit 90mph. Mileage will drop at this speed yet who drives this fast although it was designed to drive on the Autobahn.
Critical Review
paid 16,900 for a 451 Smart cabriolet. The dealership has not been able to repair faulty key switch in the many times I have asked them. stereo speakers simply disintegrated, roof delaminated, and close motor for roof has failed, battery has issues also out of range of knowledge of service tech, REALLY? Advice I was given at Mercedes dealership.... these cars do not have any value at this point we are not selling them anymore, get rid of it fast.

Excellant vehicle
No cons
Excellent vehicle, Re for selling wife's car she no longer drives, driven less than 25 miles per week. Serviced in Seattle at dealer. Always garaged.
Easy to drive and good on highways.
Keep in mind gas mileage varies with each driver.
Not expensive meaning, that as long as you find great mechanics who can and will work on them then you pay a fair price. I have had this Smart for 1 year ,just got new front tires, oil change, plugs and tune up,filters and nose to tail inspection...all at a reasonable price from the best mechanics ever....now she is ready for winter once again. Drinving the Smart is a dream and drives like no other vehicle I have ever owned....love the handling in any weather...the looks it gets range from laughing at you to wow what is it and where can I get one.
Fun to drive, easy to park, good gas mileage
Small cargo area, rear tire wear, oil changes
Great little car for every day use. Easy to keep clean and gets 38-42 mpg.
Great gas millage. Plastic body panels won't rust.
Not enough dealers.
My smart is a great little car. Starting with 2015 they finally fixed the annoying tranny issue. When driving down the road it does not feel like your in such a small car. Lots of room and easiest to get in and out ,of any car I have ever owned. I think Smart just didn't know how to target the correct buyers for this great little car. They could of sold a ton of they.
great gas mileage, easy to park, easy to keep clean
short weelbase,rear tire wear
great little car for local driving
Fun to drive, turning radius, options
Only 2 seats
I bought a new 2008 smart passion . I eventually got used to it’s quirky transmission, mastered the paddle shifters and loved it. Kept it 9 1/2 years . Oil changes, brakes, tires and gas. Never a breakdown. Not even a battery. Bought a new 2017 smart prime cabrio. HUGE improvement over my 2008. Absolutely love it. If the 2008 - 2015 smarts were like the 2016’s and newer, the sales would have been much better. I miss the paddle shifters but the hp, turbo, dual clutch automatic, Bluetooth, cruse control, sharper turning radius, nicer interior, better gas mileage and convertible top more than make up for it.
Great gas mileage, fun and sporty
No back seat, expensive entry into subcompact mkt
If you live and/or work in the city its a great car. It fits in the smallest spaces and delivers good get up and go acceleration. Zipping in town for errands is a breeze. The transmission is way better than the last model, smooth and consistent. The computer doesn't lag or keep you in the wrong gear which makes the ride pleasant. Updates such as power side mirrors, heated seats, blue tooth, leather seats make it a much more modern car. Space isn't an issue either so long as it's typical grocery trips and modest Costco runs. You shouldn't have this car if you are a family of 4 or larger as it hold two people, and no back seats. The smart phone app also pairs easily and gives GPS which comes free. I have consistently gotten 41-45 mpg. Fill ups only are 8 gallons on absolute empty. Rear wheel drive is an added bonus for the sports aspect! It isn't a car for long hauls and the seats do not lay flat. Hours spent in the car would not be as comfortable. Big rigs going by also are noticeable given the tiny size and road bumps are felt as well. It takes premium fuel as a nod to the Mercedes engine. Rear wheel drive can be a downside as the tires are staggered fit and would need replacing in sets of two of different sizes and cannot be fully rotated for longevity and maximum wear. Great car and love it for what I use it for.
Comfortable, highway capable, economical, FTD!
Not good if you want to carry station wagon loads
I bought a used 09 in 2014 and drove it to 130,000. Nothing wrong with it, but I got a deal on a 2017 that a could not pass up. I have had it for 11 months and have put 20000 miles on it. Had a problem with the radio but it was fixed at the 10000 check up. A big difference between the 09 and the 2017. The 17 has a much better ride than the 09 even though they are the same length. Much better pickup than the 09, but I was not that disappointed with it, but was impressed with the improvement. Interior appointments on both cars are typical Mercedes. The new one is even better than the old one. Interior sound levels are much improved over the old model and the extra 2 inch width does make a difference. Automatic trans is much improved over the old one. The many complaints I read about the old one, which were very negative, were a bit over the top. Once you learned how to drive it, it wasnt so quarkey. As a daily runner, for one or two people, it is a great machine. Dealer ship check up are at Mercedes prices. Highway travel (20,000) in 11 months, are comfortable and inexpensive. Love the turning ability and the easy parking capability.
