2026 Mazda CX-70 PHEV: Our Favorite Features and Tech

  • 2026 Mazda CX-70 PHEV stretches out as one of the roomiest 2-row SUVs.
  • The CX-70 PHEV comes loaded with luxury touches, from leather-trimmed seats to power everything.
  • CX-70 PHEV is priced only $2,000 more than the gas-only CX-70.

The 2026 Mazda CX-70 PHEV crosses over several lines to give SUV shoppers more choice. Mazda’s newest model shares the same size and dimensions as the Mazda CX-90 3-row SUV, but the CX-70 has only two rows and greater cargo capacity. The CX-70 can be had with a gas powertrain or a more powerful and more efficient plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, which can travel up to an EPA-estimated 32 miles on electric power. And, like other new Mazdas, it leans toward the luxury segment in its upper trims.

There’s plenty to like about the 2026 Mazda CX-70 PHEV, especially a starting price of $45,780 (including destination fee), which is only $2,000 more than a gas-only CX-70. Here are some of our favorite features and tech.

Spacious Cargo Area

Seating up to five passengers, the CX-70 is the same size as the CX-90 that seats up to eight passengers. Without a third row, the CX-70 excels with an exceptional amount of cargo room behind the second-row seats. That measures out to 39.6 cubic feet, or with the 60/40-split rear seats folded down, it has 75.3 cubic feet of cargo space. That’s about four rollaboard suitcases more than the Volvo XC60 PHEV and the Genesis GV70.

Powerful PHEV Powertrain

Launched just last year, the Mazda CX-70 PHEV comes standard with all-wheel drive (AWD). A robust electric motor, fed by a 17.8-kWh battery, pairs with a turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine to generate 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. That outperforms the base CX-70 and its turbocharged 3.3-liter inline 6-cylinder that makes 280 hp and 332 lb-ft. There is also a Turbo S gas-only model, which produces 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, but it starts at nearly $55,000. The PHEV is a tad quicker than that model.

Efficient EV Powertrain

The CX-70 PHEV is more efficient than the two other CX-70 variants. In EV mode, Mazda says it can travel up to an EPA-estimated 32 miles on battery power alone. That enables most daily runs without using gas. With both gas and electric power, it is estimated to get the equivalent of 61 mpg. Plug it in at night via a standard outlet, and it’ll charge in less than seven hours. Install a Level 2 (240-volt) charger, and it’ll charge to full in 90 minutes, according to Mazda. When the juice runs out, it still operates efficiently, with an EPA-estimated 26 mpg combined. There are other, similar-sized SUV hybrids without a plug that fare better — Toyota Grand Highlander, Hyundai Palisade, and Kia Sorento, to name a few — but they can’t travel around town without using gas. So, the more miles you drive on battery power, the greater the fuel savings with the CX-70 PHEV. Of note, the Mazda’s gas engine requires pricey premium gas.

Top Safety Ratings and Features

Like nearly every other Mazda model except for the MX-5 Miata roadster, the CX-70 PHEV excels at crash-test safety ratings. It earns a Top Safety Pick+ award, which is the highest honor given by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It also earns the top 5-Star overall safety score by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additionally, Mazda equips the CX-70 PHEV with driver-assist systems that can cost extra on luxury models, including an adaptive cruise control system that restarts from a stop so you can relax your feet in rush-hour traffic.
