A Look Inside the 2025 Volvo XC40

The 2025 Volvo XC40 offers plenty of bang for the buck, including a comfortable interior, loads of technology, and great style.

The XC40 comes in three equipment groups: Core, Plus, and Ultra, with the latter two offering two themes — Bright and Dark — for each. Volvo’s emphasis on producing environmentally friendly vehicles is evident in the choice of materials, but the luxury aspect isn’t ignored either, through impressive technology and thoughtful touches like an air purifier with remote cabin pre-cleaning.

The competition in the compact luxury SUV class is fierce, with the XC40 facing the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Lexus UX, and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

Let’s take a look at what the Volvo XC40 offers inside.

Passenger Room and Comfort

Comfortable seats are king, especially in a small cabin, and Volvo does them pretty well. They’re well bolstered and power-adjustable with available 4-way lumbar support and heat, if desired. The center armrest offers a couple of cupholders and some USB ports to charge smartphones. Heated front seats are also available.

In the second row, the bench seats are equally comfortable, and there is 36.1 inches of leg room, which puts the XC40 in the bottom half of the segment. However, our vehicle testers above six feet tall say they feel very comfortable back there. There is a center armrest that offers two cupholders, which is very handy when there are just two people back there.

Features and Tech

Volvo’s team likes to offer a clean look on the inside, especially the dashboard, and the XC40 is no exception. With a 12.3-inch gauge cluster and a 9-inch vertical touchscreen, everything is easy to see and use. The same can be said for the wireless smartphone charging pad.

While there is Apple CarPlay, you’ll need to wire in to use it. Google built-in integration allows easy access to apps like Google Maps and Google Play. The standard audio system isn’t bad, with eight speakers, seven channels, and 250 watts, but if you love music, upgrade to the Harman Kardon Premium Sound System, with its 13 speakers, 12 channels, 600 watts output, and a subwoofer.

Volvo offers plenty of safety tech, including its blind-spot and cross-traffic alert system, collision mitigation support, lane-keeping aid, oncoming lane mitigation, and more.

Materials and Design

The seats in the XC40 come in one of two materials: faux leather or leather. The faux leather is easy to clean, durable, and, most importantly, comfortable. The Urban Grid brushed aluminum panels on the dash and doors give the cabin a contemporary feel. They look great during the day and, with the ambient lighting package, enhance the cabin’s mood at night.

The contemporary look and feel of the cabin are further enhanced by the sculpted, leather-free gear selector with matte and glossy surfaces, satin silk trim, and contrasting glossy black décor panels.

Cargo Room and Flexibility

Volvo does a fine job of finding ways to make it possible to carry more things than one might expect. That said, there are 16.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which lags a few competitors, such as the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, but is not too bad.

However, there is also a removable/folding load floor in the cargo space that provides a bit more room so you can squeeze in another suitcase or small bag. When you fold down the second row, the available space opens to 57.5 cubic feet. To ease loading, a power-operated liftgate is available.
