The all-new Mazda CX-50 Hybrid offers buyers the best of all worlds: the upscale, but off-roadable performance the non-hybrid provides, but with fuel economy challenging the best in the compact SUV segment.
Some competitors like the Kia Sportage Hybrid may enjoy better fuel economy than the 38 mpg combined you get in the CX-50 Hybrid, which features all-wheel drive (AWD) standard. However, when you add all-wheel drive to the Sportage Hybrid, its 43 mpg combined slides to 38 mpg combined.

Passenger Room and Comfort
The CX-50 Hybrid doesn’t offer the largest cabin in the segment, but there is more than enough space in the front and second rows for adults to be comfortable, whether running around town or a longer trek to somewhere in the great outdoors.
To ensure that everyone is comfortable, there are heated front seats and dual-zone climate control to ensure the front-seat occupants are comfortable. As you move up the trim levels, the front passenger also gets a 6-way power seat, and there is a 2-position memory seat for the driver’s side. Ventilated seats are available on the Premium model, which become standard on the Premium Plus.
Features and Tech
The CX-50 Hybrid isn’t just technologically advanced under the hood. It’s loaded with the latest convenience tech that enhances any drive in this SUV. In addition to a 10.25-inch center-mounted touchscreen on the dashboard, buyers get Alexa Built-in, a wireless phone charger, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration as standard equipment.
No one wants to be in a vehicle without a premium sound system, and the CX-50 Hybrid can be had with a 12-speaker Bose surround-sound system with Centerpoint and AudioPilot. There are four USB-C ports in the cabin: two front and back to ensure everyone remains charged.
The safety tech includes rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, driver attention alert, lane departure warning system with lane-keep assist, emergency lane keeping with road keep assist, and Smart Brake Support head-on collision mitigation.
Materials and Design
The Hybrid starts at the Preferred trim, which gets you leatherette seats in one of three colors. Moving up in the trim levels means enjoying leather seating that is available in black or a special red color unique to hybrid CX-50 models, as well as specialized stitching.
In addition to the leather seats, the Hybrid Premium’s one-touch power-sliding panoramic sunroof not only lets in plenty of light but also offers an open-air feeling.
Cargo Room and Flexibility
Mazda engineers used a lot of brain power when determining where to stow the hybrid battery in the CX-50 Hybrid. They elected to put it in the rear section of the floor of the vehicle, ensuring it wouldn’t impinge on the cargo space so many users of a compact SUV rely on.
This is especially important for the CX-50 Hybrid, whose owners are often outdoor enthusiasts, carting bikes, camping equipment, or other things needed for an active lifestyle. You can access this space with an optional rear power liftgate.
