The Volkswagen Group has been part of some significant recalls over the past several years, including cars and SUVs recalled for violations of the EPA Clean Air Act over excessive diesel emissions, while others have been recalled for faulty Takata airbag inflators.
While not a safety recall, Volkswagen has admitted to bypassing the emissions control systems in 460,000 vehicles powered by 2.0-liter diesel engine sold in the US since 2008. Later, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated that Volkswagen Group failed to comply with the Clean Air Act regulations based on the 2009-2015 3.0-liter V6 Diesel as used in about 78,000 Audi, Porsche and VW Touareg vehicles.
In August 2017, Volkswagen recalled 280,915 model year 2009-2016 Volkswagen CC, 2006-2010 Passat and Passat Wagon vehicles for a fuel pump failure. If the pump failed, the engine would stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Volkswagen has a recall of 659,493 vehicles including 2010-2014 Golf and Jetta SportWagen models, 2007-2010 Passat sedans and wagons, 2012-2014 Passat sedans, and Eos models, and 2009-2014 CC models as part of the Takata airbag campaign. In the event of a crash, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking occupants resulting in serious injury or death. As of April 2018, there has been a completion rate of approximately 43 percent.
In another airbag related recall that affects nearly 6000 model year 2017 Volkswagen Golf and Tiguan and 2016 Volkswagen e-Golf vehicles involves driver frontal airbags, passenger frontal airbags or head airbags that may not deploy properly.
In August 2015, the company recalled 415,825 model year 2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, Passat, 2010-2013 Eos, 2011-2014 Golf, GTI, Jetta, Tiguan, and 2014 Jetta SportWagen vehicle because of a possible loss of an electrical connection to the driver’s front airbag rendering it inoperable.
In October 2015, Volkswagen recalled nearly 92,000 model year 2015-16 Jetta, Beetle, Beetle Convertible, Passat, Golf and Golf SportWagen vehicles for possible shearing of a camshaft lobe that drives the brake vacuum pump. If the lobe shears off there would be a loss of brake power, increasing the risk of a crash.
In January 2015, the company recalled 44,658 model year 2014-15 Jetta, Passat, Golf and GTI, Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles for a sealing cap on the fuel rail which may fail, allowing fuel to leak into the engine compartment.
