As with many manufacturers, Mazda has been caught up in the massive Takata airbag recall. Newer models affected by the recall include the 2007-2012 CX-7, 2007-2013 CX-9, and 2003-2013 Mazda6. In July 2018, Mazda added more cars to the Takata airbag recall list including 2003-2008 Mazda6, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed 6, and some 2004-2006 MPV minivans. More recent recalls have centered primarily around the CX-5, Mazda3, and Mazda6. In June 2018, Mazda recalled 687 2018 CX-5 SUVs due to a possible problem with the side airbags not unfolding properly in the event of a crash.
In 2017, Mazda recalled over 17,000 Mazda3 and Mazda6 cars for fuel tank related issues. A recall was issued for the 2014-2016 Mazda3 due to a deformed fuel tank that could spring a leak around an improperly installed check valve, risking a fire. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), as of April 2018, the completion rate for this recall was at 79.9 percent. Another 14,441 2015-2016 Mazda3 vehicles were recalled due to a possible faulty fuel shut-off valve that could allow gasoline to enter the fuel tank emission system. If enough fuel gets into the system, it can cause the engine to stall. The completion rate for this recall as of April 2017 was 93.5 percent.
227,814 2014-2015 Mazda6 and 2014-2016 Mazda3 vehicles were recalled due to parking brake actuators that may corrode. Corrosion of the actuator shaft may result in the parking brake failing to fully engage or disengage, which may lead to the vehicle unexpectedly rolling away from a parked position. As of April 2018, the completion rate for this recall was at 32.3 percent.
Mazda also recalled 5,700 2014 Mazda3 and 2014-2015 Mazda6 vehicles for a possible issue with the charging system. Should the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) determine that the charging system has failed, the results may include poor acceleration, power steering loss, and/or engine stall. As of July 2015, the completion rate for this recall was at 84.3 percent.
Certain 2014-2016 Mazda CX-5 vehicles might have their fuel filler pipe rupture in the event of a crash. Dealers will alter the attachment connecting the filler pipe to the attaching bracket free of charge. As of July 2017, the completion rate for the 268,799 vehicles involved in this recall was 82.3 percent.
