The definition of code U0422 is “Invalid Data Received From Body Control Module.” It means that multiple modules on your vehicle’s CAN bus, most typically the powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control module (ECM), have detected implausible data coming from your body control module. This generic code can appear in any OBD-II vehicle that utilizes a body control module, although it seems especially common in Ford vehicles.

More About Error Code U0422

Your vehicle’s body control module is generally responsible for onboard electronics. It may control vehicle components such as electronic windows, power mirrors, the immobilizer system, the central locking system, and even air conditioning in some vehicles. Other modules within the CAN bus will monitor the information the body control module sends out, ensuring the information seems correct. If data from the body control module doesn’t sound quite right, it will log this code.

What Are the Symptoms of a U0422 Code?

The most common symptoms of the U0422 code will usually be associated with your onboard electronics. For example, electronic locks might not work, and you may need a physical key to open the doors. Your power mirrors and electronic windows may not function properly, and your onboard lights might be dimmed or turned on. Depending on the vehicle make and model, an issue with module data may also cause your vehicle not to turn on or to boot in “Limp Mode,” a failsafe mode that restricts the vehicle’s speed and overall function. You should also see the check engine light turn on.

What Are Some Causes of a U0422 Code?

Most of the time, the U0422 code occurs simply because of circuitry problems, including damaged wiring and poor electric connections, either within the body control module itself or in the connections between the body control module and its various sensors. There may also be a problem with the body control module itself, either that the module is faulty or there’s a programming issue you need to fix. If the sensors transmitting data to the body control module are faulty, it can also pass on data that doesn’t seem legitimate.

How Serious Is the U0422 Code?

You should generally assume that the U0422 code is pretty serious. While your body control module may not be the most serious in your vehicle, OBD2 trouble codes shouldn’t be ignored. It can make it more difficult to get into your vehicle, cause difficulties in turning on your lights at night, and make it impossible to adjust your mirrors to ensure you can see everything around you. Plus, in some cases, it may also make it difficult or impossible for you to drive.

Can I Still Drive with a U0422 Code?

It depends on your specific symptoms as to whether or not you can drive when the U0422 code is active. You should assume that you won’t be able to drive very easily. It’s common for the vehicle not to turn on when this code is active, and if it does turn on, it may boot into “Limp Home Mode.” Even if you can drive with few problems, you never know when these problems will show up, and just fixing the problem is much safer.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a U0422 Code?

The process of diagnosing a U0422 code is difficult. This OBD-II code is fairly generic. It only indicates an issue with the data coming out of the body control module, not where that data is coming from or what data has a problem. You may need to check every sensor and piece of wiring connected to and from the body control module to find where the problem is. It’s best to talk to a certified mechanic when trying to diagnose the U0422 code, as it’s quite difficult to diagnose this problem independently.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a U0422 Code?

As with the diagnostic process, the inspection process for the U0422 communication code is also difficult. There’s a lot of real estate to cover, and you need to inspect plenty of wiring and sensors to determine the true problem. On top of your normal code scanner, you might need access to reliable vehicle information, including vehicle guides, repair manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical service bulletins. Because it is often difficult to inspect this code, you may need to talk to a professional mechanic to fix this issue.

Need Additional Help with Your U0422 Code?

Many people end up needing help with their U0422 diagnostic trouble code. If you’re experiencing issues with the U0422 code, you’re not alone, and plenty of repair experts can help.

To start, find an auto repair shop in your area. The U0422 code can result in a vehicle that can’t start, and finding a local automobile repair shop will cut down on towing costs.

Sometimes, this code will also come with additional codes on your scan tool. This can help narrow down the actual problem you’re experiencing. The OBD-II database, available at KBB.com, will give you insight into the other codes, including what they mean and how they’ll impact your vehicle.
