Error code U0101 means that the TCM, or transmission control module, is unable to communicate with other control modules on the vehicle. Typically, the vehicle will send this code if the PCM (powertrain control module), which monitors the CAN (controller area network), hasn’t received any messages within a specific amount of time, as a well-functioning TCM will send messages regularly.
More About the U0101 Code
The U0101 code is typically the same as a U0100 code, but some makes and models will send the U0101 code if there’s a specific problem with the TCM, while the U0100 code may be more general and applies to all communication issues with the ECM, PCM, and TCM. Additionally, only some models have the U0101 code, while every vehicle make and model since 1996 will send a U0100 code.

Typically, you’ll find issues with a vehicle’s transmission when receiving a U0101 code. This may include everything from general transmission performance problems to the vehicle refusing to shift out of a specific gear or even just an illuminated check engine light that won’t seem to go away. This is one of the reasons why a check engine light is important to check, even if it doesn’t seem to be causing problems right now.
A U0101 code occurs because the TCM is having a difficult time communicating with the rest of the car. That means the most common reasons for a U0101 code are very simple things, such as a faulty battery with voltage issues, damaged terminals, disconnected connectors, and damage to the ground connection. You may also find issues with the TCM itself, as well as potential problems with the CAN.
It depends on the specific problems that you experience with the U0101 code. If your only issue is that your check engine light is on, then the U0101 code likely isn’t going to cause significant issues while you drive. However, because the U0101 code has to do with your transmission, a more serious problem could result in issues with your car switching into any gear or switching into “limp mode,” which will cause less “important” elements in your car, like the air conditioning, to switch off. No matter how serious the U0101 code seems right now, it’s always a good idea to get it checked out by a professional.
Most of the time, it is possible to drive with a U0101 code. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea. A U0101 code can, as mentioned earlier, cause problems with your transmission, which can have a serious negative impact on your engine. If your engine is returning a U0101 code, then you should make sure you fix it as soon as possible. This is a better way to solve your problem without any harm to your engine.
Recognizing a U0101 code is not very difficult, as it’s a common code that the engine will send out automatically. However, diagnosing the actual problem you’re experiencing can be much more difficult. As previously stated, there are many reasons why you might experience a U0101 code, and you need to know not only that you’re experiencing the code but also how to find and fix the problem. Instead of trying to DIY the fix, which can be dangerous for yourself and for your engine, talk to a professional and allow them to diagnose the code for you.
To inspect a U0101 code, you need to perform a visual inspection of the CAN bus network, check the TCM, ECM, and PCM, and ensure that all connectors are properly connected and functioning appropriately. This is more difficult than it may seem on its face, especially if you don’t have any experience with the mechanics inside of a car and understanding how a car is put together. This is why even the inspection process should be left to a qualified professional for the best results.
For a proper diagnosis and repair that will get your car back out on the road and functioning properly, it’s best to avoid a DIY fix for a U0101 code. Even if the only problem you’ve noticed is the check engine light, it’s still best to have a professional take a look at your engine and verify what’s going on.
