You’ve likely heard of “transmission slipping” before; this term describes what happens when your vehicle slips into a specific gear without matching the applicable speed, and it is most noticeable when your engine revs but you don’t see any increase in speed. This code indicates that something like this is happening within your transmission, and it generally means that some component within the transmission is having slippage problems.
More About the P0894 Code
An automatic transmission needs to read a wide variety of metrics to determine when it needs to move into a new gear. It uses clutches, bands, and servos to hold and manage one of the gearsets within the transmission, and when the transmission is “slipping,” that means one or more of these elements no longer holds the gearset in place. This code indicates that this problem is happening, which the onboard monitors are able to notice because of a variety of elements that can show this issue.

The check engine light will generally turn on with the P0894 code. On top of this, you may see all manner of issues with your transmission, generally having to do with issues surrounding your vehicle’s ability to switch gears appropriately. This may include issues with switching gears, which you may notice due to an inappropriately high or low RPM, transmission overheating, and rough shifting, as well as a decrease in fuel efficiency. In some situations, you may only notice the check engine light, with no noticeable symptoms in drivability at first.
Many different issues can lead to the P0894 code turning on. You may see any number of mechanical failures within the transmission, including issues with your shift solenoids. The transmission fluid passages may be clogged or blocked, or the transmission fluid itself may be low, empty, or contaminated, causing it to not work as intended. In some cases, this code can also be due to issues with the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM), although these are the least likely causes and should only be considered last.
The P0894 code is very serious. Even if you’re not currently seeing any issues with your vehicle’s drivability, problems with your transmission are very serious and will only worsen over time. In fact, it’s most important to handle the P0894 code if you don’t see any issues with drivability, as that likely means you can fix the problem without having to replace the transmission, which can be extremely expensive and difficult.
You should not drive with the P0894 code active. Even if you are physically able to drive your vehicle with the P0894 code active, you should avoid doing so because the longer you drive with it active, the more likely you’ll be to encounter serious problems, which could include damaging the vehicle. If you notice any of the symptoms associated with this code or you notice it when scanning the engine for codes, then stop driving and get your vehicle to an expert as soon as possible.
Diagnosis for a P0894 code can be surprisingly difficult. As you have likely noticed, there are a wide number of different causes for the P0894 code, and all of them are a possibility that you have to rule out before you can be certain of what’s causing the code. If you can fix the problem by changing or topping up your transmission fluid, then you may be able to fix the problem at home; otherwise, assume that an expert will be your best option.
The inspection process beyond the transmission fluid issues can be very difficult. You’ll need to assess the internal transmission by sight, looking for damaged wires or harnesses and faulty connectors. This requires you to know how to spot these issues and how to resolve them, something that many DIYers and hobbyists aren’t well-versed in. For issues past the transmission fluid, seek help from an expert.
If you’ve already tried changing the transmission fluid, or you’d just rather have an expert fix the problem from start to finish, then there are plenty of options available in your area.
