This code indicates an error with the microprocessor integrity conditions inside your powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control unit (ECU). This is a complex error that has to do with your car’s internal memory. As cars have gotten more powerful, more computing power has needed to enter the picture, and that means more checks and balances to ensure the computer is working properly. A P0601 code indicates a problem with the computing process.
More About the P0601 Code
The way that your PCM works is that various internal components are connected using a data bus. When your engine needs to transmit communication packets, it also transmits a checksum, which is a mathematical operation the PCM repeatedly runs. If the PCM is unable to read the checksum or the checksum has an unexpected value, then it will send the P0601 error.

The symptoms of a P0601 code can vary dramatically depending on the problem that caused the code. While you’ll almost certainly see the check engine light, other indications of a problem may include issues with shifting, problems with turning on and running smoothly, and even problems with your engine stalling. In some cases, however, you might see no symptoms at all except the check engine light.
Usually, the P0601 code happens because of an issue with one of your control modules. That may mean that the control module itself is faulty or that the control module’s circuit is broken, whether through damaged wires or through a generally poor connection. It also can occur due to low voltage, whether because the battery is low or because the wiring isn’t working effectively.
The P0601 code can be very serious because it can cause your car to stall out or die in the middle of the road, can make it much more difficult to shift, and could potentially leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere if your car won’t start again. While not all cars throwing this code will have serious issues with the car starting, you don’t want to take that chance.
It’s best to avoid driving with the P0601 code. Again, it can cause serious problems all throughout your car, and while some of those problems may just be annoying, other problems can leave you stranded on the side of the road. If you’re noticing this problem or you’ve seen the check engine light pop up, talk to an expert to get help with it.
This problem tends to happen because of issues with voltage or connection, which means that as long as you know how to test those problems, it can be surprisingly easy to diagnose a P0601 code — the PCM needs a certain voltage, typically between 14.5-10.5.If you’re not confident in your DIY skills, it’s best to get an expert to help you with the diagnostic process, as you’ll likely need to run an advanced scan to see exactly where the problem is and find out how to fix it.
The inspection process requires you to have a general understanding of how the PCM works and what might cause it to show concern. You should also know how to spot corroded or otherwise faulty wires. Additionally, if your vehicle is throwing more than just a single code, you need to know how to see which codes are causing the main problem, then understand how to fix all the codes at once. If you’re not well-versed in DIY car fixes, then it’s best to leave these complex processes up to an expert.
Especially if you find that the P0601 code has been making your car act up in a variety of ways, it could be important to talk to an expert about it. Whether you’re just not interested in trying to fix the problem yourself or you’re a beginner and not well-versed in DIY solutions, it’s possible to get help with this code and ensure your car is able to parse checksums in the future.
Your first step should be to find a repair shop in your area. Kelley can help you find a local repair shop so that you don’t have to go very far, avoiding any issues with driving a long distance on a car that might already have serious problems.
You can also use the OBD-II database from KBB to learn more about other types of codes. This database gives you more insight into general car codes, which can help you understand the different ways that these codes might impact your car’s drivability.
