Error code P0299 is a specific extension of OBD-II code P0. P0 codes are generic regarding all makes and models and are displayed as P0XXX. The third numeral in the code sequence identifies where a vehicle’s OBD-II system has encountered an error. The number 2 indicates a malfunction regarding a vehicle’s fuel and air metering with the injector circuit.
A turbocharger uses your car’s normal exhaust gasses to turn a fan/turbine. This increases the intake pressure and supplies more air to the combustion process. When this expulsion is too low, error code P0299 is triggered.

The most common symptom of a P0299 error code is the illumination of your car’s check engine light. Take this seriously! It indicates that your 4-wheeled “baby” might need repairs. Aside from this and your vehicle entering limp mode, you’ll experience a lack of engine power and a noise coming from the area of the car that houses the turbo/supercharger.
One of the most common causes of this error code is a faulty turbo or supercharger. Your car may also have or a faulty boost pressure sensor. Low oil pressure will result in the turbo component of your vehicle being starved of lubrication, which will cause internal bearings of the turbo to fail. There may also be a fault in your vehicle’s EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system or an air or intake leak/restriction.

If left unaddressed, a P0299 DTC can lead to serious mechanical failure. If you notice any mechanical noises or experience any drivability concerns, you should repair your car as soon as possible. Driving your car with a failed turbocharger can result in costly engine damage.
To avoid engine damage, you’ll need to see a qualified mechanic ASAP for proper diagnosis and repairs. This is especially true if your vehicle has a failed turbocharger unit.
There are a many common mistakes DIYers make when diagnosing P0299. One of the most common is replacing parts that are still functional. Failing to perform the diagnostic steps in the proper order can lead to other mistakes as well. A P0299 error code may have a multitude of symptoms and causes. It’s important to request the services of a qualified mechanic for an accurate diagnosis.
A mechanic will first hook up an OBD-II scan tool to the vehicle’s OBD-II port and check for any present codes. They’ll then check the freeze-frame data to see when and how the error code occurred. The codes will then be reset and the mechanic will take the vehicle for a test drive.
At this point the mechanic will perform a visual inspection of the turbo/supercharger system, EGR system, intake system and any other systems that may be associated with the code. Then they’ll use the scan tools to check for proper boost pressure readings. They’ll then inspect mechanical systems such as the turbo/supercharger, oil pressure and check the intake system for any leaks or restrictions.
Considering all these steps, it’s always best to rely on an expert for an accurate diagnosis.
Repairs for a P0299 error code usually include replacing the turbo/supercharger, repairing the intake system, replacing the EGR, repairing low engine oil pressure, or replacing the boost pressure sensor. These replacements and repairs can be very intricate, therefore it’s best to rely on the expertise of a professional mechanic to perform them.
