The P0261 and P0262 code definitions are “Cylinder 1 Injector Circuit Low” and “Cylinder 1 Injector Circuit High,” respectively. These codes indicate that your powertrain control module (PCM) or engine control module (ECM) has identified a possible problem with your vehicle’s fuel injectors because the circuit related to the fuel injectors gives a reference voltage that is too high or too low. This generic powertrain code can show up in most OBD-II-equipped vehicles.

More About the P0261 Code

Your fuel injection system exists to provide your engine with the right amount of fuel. Your fuel mixture needs to be very precisely balanced. Too much fuel and you’ll have a rich mixture; too little, and you’ll have a lean mixture. Either of these issues can cause serious problems for your engine, ranging from monetary problems like poor fuel economy to issues that can possibly create serious engine damage, like engine misfires. The P0261 and P0262 error codes indicate that your fuel injector circuits are displaying voltage that is either too low or too high for the reference voltage level.

What Are the Symptoms of a P0261 Code?

The first symptom you’ll usually notice with codes P0261 and P0262 is that your check engine light will turn on. However, on top of this, it’s quite common to see drivability issues associated with these codes. Generally, an issue with your automotive fuel injector can result in a general lack of power, as well as rough running and a large drop in fuel economy. Occasionally, depending on the underlying problem, the running may be rough enough to include issues like misfiring.

What Are Some Causes of a P0261 Code?

There are a significant number of possible causes associated with the P0261 and P0262 codes. Here are a few of the issues that might result in these codes:

  • Faulty fuel injector
  • Obstructed fuel injector
  • Dirty fuel injector
  • Fuel injector harness open or short
  • Loose or corroded fuel injector connector
  • General electrical connector issues, including corroded connectors
  • Fuel injector control module fault
  • Customer-installed items incorrectly installed
  • Issues with the PCM

This is in no way a complete list of causes. If you see this code, you’ll need to do a full inspection to ensure you know the actual cause.

How Serious Is the P0261 Code?

It’s best to consider this code fairly serious. Any time you see a check engine light with codes, this tends to be a sign that you should get a code checked soon. In this case, fuel injector issues can result in serious problems for your engine overall, whether you’re dealing with wiring harness issues, a general low-voltage situation, or even problems with your fuel pump relay. Don’t let this code just stay in your vehicle forever; contact an expert to get help.

Can I Still Drive with a P0261 Code?

Technically, you should be able to drive when the P0261 and P0262 codes are active. However, faults with your vehicle’s electrical connections should never be ignored, especially if they have to do with your fuel system. Leaving this code unattended can result in having to eventually check your cylinder for damage, which can be much more expensive and difficult than just fixing codes for injectors early on. When it comes to diagnostic trouble codes P0261 and P0262, stop driving once you notice them.

How Easy Is It to Diagnose a P0261 Code?

It’s true that a faulty injector tends to be one of the more common causes of the P0261 and P0262 codes, but you can’t just expect that the repair procedure will require a replacement without any other looking. Before you decide on your repair steps, you’ll need to do a full diagnostic inspection to check for components like a clogged fuel injector, disconnected wiring to the cylinder injector circuit, voltage conditions, general electrical faults, and more. This is where a professional mechanic can really help.

How Difficult Is It to Inspect a P0261 Code?

The inspection for these types of codes tends to be fairly difficult, partially because the code can show up differently for every vehicle manufacturer. Even just a basic defective fuel injector can have a different inspection process for each vehicle, make, and model. Plus, these issues can increase with problems related to internal springs, fuel pressure regulators, and harness connectors. An expert will be able to help you figure out the core problem without making the type of common mistake that a DIYer would more easily make.

Need Additional Help with Your P0261 Code?

Extra help is very commonly needed when it comes to concerns with a powertrain control module. Regardless of the problem you’re seeing with your high- or low-voltage wiring, an expert can help you fix it.

Your first step should be to find an auto repair shop in your area. A local auto repair shop will have the technical know-how to fix everything ranging from oxygen sensor wiring to PCM injector driver issues.
