"They run like a champ if you just maintain them."

Can you keep up of the fluids in a vehicle then this car is for you. A lot of people buy them for the cool offroading features but do not maintain them then complain when they fail. Hello, it's not a Honda. Used Rovers if maintained will run for a long time.

"Mechanics Dream"

Bought a 2004 USED for my wife. Second car with quality AWD Traction System.Great winter driving car very safe and reliable. And yes I am a mechanic and was very reluctant to purchase a European luxury SUV knowing it may cost big bucks to fix! However after many years of caring for this car and chasing a few electrical issues I found this works 70% of the time correcting other repetitive performance problems AND in harmony with good manufactures maintenance schedules! The more power options you have clicked on the more tax on your charging / battery system. These cars have heated windshield, seats, power this and that, the list goes on, not to mention the ghost systems like alarms , anti theft systems that run on all the time! The driver inadvertently creates more problems by throwing on all these comfortable options that sap away at this little batteries reserve. Then we sits in traffic for an hour low idle stop and go. Your battery is too undersized right from the factory.LR puts in the smallest battery and there is not enough reserve power in these batteries to keep things going when you load up all of the above. And LR will not change the battery out under warranty if it is performing within design! I tried BUT because I am not an electrical engineer , my suggestion fell upon deaf ears...not broke CAN'T fix it? Any way.... Weak battery power compounds into your OBD-2 ignition-fuel management computer, if not functioning at full power will, throw bad mis fire codes, no spark at cylinders , check engine lights come on . Makes the car run rough , sluggish poor acceleration lack of power.I even had one door lock actuator that was periodically defective that assumed I was steeling the Freelander because one door was still locked? The car would not start until I made sure all the POWER door lock buttons where in the unlock position. All due to a weak battery and not enough power to push the electric lock to the open position! Also the cooling fans in this car again are electric taxing even more battery power. When the cooling fans won't run at full rpm they over heat. Melting all the plastic cooling connectors in this car leaking out vital coolant. All while staring at that never to hit HOT dash gauge! Because it measure liquid temps and there is nothing left in the liquid cooling system. ALL cars are designed this way If you over heat one of these all aluminum / plastic - engines you can expect big bucks for repair. Thanks to MY WIFE we dodged a huge repair bill she knew when she saw steam coming out from under the hood she needed to pull over and shut down immediately. If you are experiencing problems change out you pencil coils , up size the battery the bigger reserve power the better , test clean the cooling system, load test the charging system. All of these above suggestions DO NOT need to be done at a $135.00 / hour Land Rover Dealer. Your local Jack, Johns, Sandie's auto repair shop , mechanics shop with AMA / BBB status can do this for you for a fraction of the big dealer prices. If the car is off warranty or you need a second opinion the local Mom and Pop shops are a better bet. Nut Shell: Great Car just know its limits....and know a honest good mechanic!

They run like a champ if you just maintain them.
Pros

Super fun to offroad

Cons

When a part fails, I sometimes need to order it.

It's been a great little 4x4
Pros

Smooth ride, very capable offroad

Cons

Need to maintain properly, it's not a Honda.

If you maintain these little trucks they don't fail you. The problem is that people buy them, offroad them and don't keep up on the fluids, etc. I haven't had any major problems with my SE3 and it's coming up on 90,000 miles and its a 2003!

Poor engineering on doors and windows,
Pros

looks cool

Cons

Low grade Plastic parts for critical components

should have kept this on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean or dropped it off the freighter into the ocean on the way over here to America. I could dig up a Rambler 1962 classic from the junk yard and it would ne more reliable

You couldn't give me another one of these
Pros

OK gas mileage

Cons

Overpriced and unreliable.

I've owned a 2003 Freelander for 10 years and am finally getting rid of it after spending about 3x its worth in repairs. It served as a college car for my 2 kids so for that purpose it beat buying new ones for them. Biggest complaint is that things went wrong with it that should never happen to a "high end" car with this mileage - cracks in both front axles, power window controller died, automatic door lock controller died,a clogged drain under the wipers caused water to leak onto the floorboards, the roof leaked, the fuel pump conked out at 75K miles, etc. etc. If you don't live near a Land Rover dealer you may have problems getting other foreign car repair shops to work on one of these. And LR dealers charge you as if they were repairing a nuclear submarine instead of an internal combustion engine. Every time I see someone driving a new LR the old saying about a fool and his money parting ways comes to mind.

No Free in Freelander
Pros

Good looking

Cons

Never made it to that glacier it supposedly climbs

Horrible. Friday the 13th kind of horrible. First year was great, exceptionally good looking , tight drive. Then everything starts breaking down, window motors , transmission F4, then my engine blew up. It blew up. Like went pow. Dealership just shrugs and charges a mint. The butt warmers do make waiting for the tow truck in the winter nice.

Great Car!
Pros

Fun to drive, good price, good gas mileage.

Cons

Accelerates slowly, upholstery isn't durable.

This car is awesome, but the only complaints I have are first, that it isn't quite "tall person" friendly! The driver's seat doesn't quite go back far enough for a tall person! Secondly, I expected it to be a get-up'n'go car, but it accelerates very slowly. Fun to drive, good gas mileage for it's size. (17-22 mpg)
