"Traded UP to a Hyundai?"

Just 10 years ago, the idea of trading up to a Hyundai from a Ford or a Toyota or a Nissan or a Volkswagen (like I just did) would have been the punchline to a joke. Not anymore! This 2020 Hyundai Palisade is lapping the competition in its assigned mainstream 3-row SUV segment, but would comfortably hold its own against the likes of BMW, Infiniti, and Cadillac in the luxury segment. Seriously. The drive is good. 291 horsepower delivers adequate power. No one is drag racing their 3-row SUV anyway. Smooth transmission, comfortable, quiet ride. All Wheel Drive has been working well (although this is not a true off-road vehicle). MPG has been about 20% higher than the estimates. Had one 120-mile stretch where the Palisade averaged 36 (yes, 36) miles per gallon and NOT in Eco mode! This was an anomaly, as it usually gets about 24-26 MPG for me. Plenty of room. Not as cavernous as an Atlas or Traverse, but bigger than a Highlander or an Explorer (yes - believe it or not). Plus in the Limited trim that I bought, it is filled with great technology, safety features, and a luxurious combination of interior materials. It truly is the whole package. It's not 100 percent excellent - not having power folding mirrors is a demerit. And the stock Bridgestone tires should be Michelins instead. But these are "rich people problems." It's hard to find anything wrong with the Hyundai Palisade. (Also - I can't rate the reliability as a 5 because I have not owned it long enough. I assume it will be reliable considering it has a 10 year 100,000 mile drive train warranty.) This is the best vehicle I have ever owned, period...including my previous Jeep Grand Cherokee and Volkswagen Atlas. I am happy I traded up.

Critical Review

"Dont buy"

I knew better than to buy the first run of a new model but did it anyway. Overall I like it and get good gas mileage 30 on highway when not towing. However, after about 5000 mikes it developed an air leak around front windows the dealer refuses to fix. It has a high pitched whistle when on highway. He Says it’s road noise and I just have to live with jt. Road noise is not high pitched but a roar from tires hitting different pavement. Check the forums many have this same issue. I have owned a Tuson, Santefe and now palisade. I will never buy another Hyuandi. They loose value much faster than any other make and they do not stand behind what they sell. Lesson learned.

Takes some getting used to

So, I previously had the Kia Sedona Minivan for about 9 years (and I love minivans) and decided to go for a 3rd row SUV. Just like Kia’s, the Hyundai seats are way too long in the leg area. I handle this with the lumbar “support” fully engaged. It’s not “lumbar” and it’s awkward, but at least my knees can make it over the edge of the seat. Like all new cars today it does too much of the driving for you and apparently has never taken driver’s Ed or a Defensive Driving Course. We all know you are supposed to signal well in advance of a lane change. This vehicle assumes that as soon as you click the turn signal you ARE moving over and alarms, buzzes, vibrates, maybe even honks to tell you to not change lanes. Super annoying. In my 30 years of driving I have never been in an accident except the one time I was rear-ended at a stop light, when I was already stopped, because the light was red. Still trying to undo the settings so the car stops driving for me such as lane assist and back-up alerts. This car has a VERY effective forgotten rear occupant alarm. I love and follow #kidsandcars and have been supporting the technology to alert parents when they think they dropped the child at school or the babysitter’s but instead have driven straight to work with the sleeping baby. #vehicularheatstroke I have preteen boys who can safely stay in the vehicle while I run into the library for 5 mins or drop off a return at the UPS store for 10 mins. But nope. The car alarm goes crazy like Godzilla just took a swing at it. As heartbreaking as it is, I have had to dismantle the rear occupant alarm. (Insert tearful sad face). If you are a parent of children under 8, please DO NOT DISABLE this alarm. Your child, and the lives of local children in the neighborhood depend on this. Now for the gear shift. Well. It’s my first time with this obnoxious push button gear change. Not like I preferred Manual Transmission (Stick Shift) by any means but yes, I want to feel like I’m driving a rugged all terrain vehicle and physically shift it into reverse or drive or park. We have had too many episodes to count where we thought we were in park or reverse or whatever only to shockingly realize we weren’t. And as for reverse, it’s “kinda” nice that the rear view camera stays on even when you then “shift” to drive but it stays on TOO long. If you are trying to use navigation or apple connect phone maps it will not engage your directions sometimes until well after you have left the parking lot, at which point you may have turned right when you were supposed to turn left. That could use some fine tuning. And while the computer tech gurus are at it, they could also improve the interface. Toggling between radio, Sirius XM, Apple Maps, and Amazon music is quirky and difficult. If you choose to use the Hyundai maps, fine. But the instructions are bottom up instead of Top down. Those of us used to Apple Maps or Google maps can’t logically follow the backwards map navigation custom built into Hyundai. Please make it easier for us iPhone users to have our maps from our phone but also AM/FM radio without having to go through 5 more steps to listen to the radio. And please make it so that we can easily set up the screen to see both the navigation AND the radio station/song playing (split screen). Two more points. I’m almost done. The A/C. In the summer I live in flip flops. If I have the AC on for face/ceiling (not feet) I still have a crazy blast of cold air on my feet while driving. I notice if I toggle it from head to feet and back to head/ceiling I can get it to calm down but it won’t entirely go away. It’s worse if I have the rear air on (which is required in the summer when my boys are back there). I lied, one more thing. The headlights have a weird triangle thing that dips into the spread of the light in the middle of the visual field and it’s a very stark light/dark contrast to the driver rather than being normal incandescent light that gently spreads. I’ll never get used to it and I refuse to set it for “high beams always on” and you need to Change your settings too so that high beams are not automatically on, but it’s such a drastic change I feel like I have to switch to high beams in dark backroads just to see 75 ft in front of my car in case of deer. We don't need shockingly bright headlights. We need an even span and gentler more gradual fading. And last, I’m very short. I usually pick SUVs and minivans based on whether I can reach the rear lift-gate. I ended up with a 2003 grand cherokee laredo when I was eyeing up the Dodge Durango simply because I could not reach the liftgate from the Durango. Now that everything is key-fob, push button electronic, that is not as much of an issue. And if I had it my way, I would keep it on the 2nd setting. Problem is, spouse is 1 foot taller than me and repeatedly bumping his head while loading up the car for road trips and I almost exclusively do all my shopping via drive up grocery order pickup which means someone else (usually average height) is loading groceries into the back of the vehicle. The hatchback is at an odd enough angle that the standard highest setting is too high for someone 5’ and shorter to reach the push button but the next setting down is too low that people of average height have to duck/bend down and often hit their head. And one more thing: the back rear window - because of the overhang you can’t effectively clean this and rain water doesn’t get to it either. If you stop at a gas station, the window cleaning squeezee also misses that entire 2-3 inch portion. Just remember to bring a damp paper towel with windex every couple of days and scrub that top section of the rear window every few days. Bonus: it has a true 3rd row seat and not just seat cushions on the floor with seatbelts. It drives nice and looks great. So I still love the car. I’d love it even more if they did fun colors like green, teal, brown, maroon, and burnt orange. I wish they would work some kinks out for the next model. (And stop making the seats so long in Kia’s and Hyundai’s - PLEASE!!!)

White paint peeling and not fixing
hyundai palisade 2024 Image - 44376473
Pros

Ok vehicle

Cons

Service and standing behind warranty sucks

I took my palisade to dealership 200 miles over the 36000 mile mark with paint peeling and was told sorry we can't fix it under the warranty and now all the roof paint has peeled off and the passenger rear door has a one foot by 1foot spot peeling so I will never buy a hyundai again!!!! I wish there was a way to publish pictures...

Great so far
Pros

Loaded with technology and comfort

Cons

Almost to much in the tech department

15000 miles and running perfectly. Enjoy the quiet and comfortable ride. The only issue is the calligraphy is packed with a ton of technology and features. It took us a little while to figure everything out. Great value

So confused
Pros

What's a good car when it worked.

Cons

Seems like something is always wrong

So I have had my 2021 palisade for 3 years I've had the alternator go up I've had to replace the battery after 2 years. And it constantly feels like I'm in a stick shift. Now it wants to sputter And sometimes stall I'm at 40000 miles. Fuel pump? Transmission? Who knows niw the fun part is ot covered..ugh..The only reason I'm giving it a 2 star is because I love the style the comfort the space for the price But you get what you pay for I guess. To have a luxury SUV for under 50.

Love it so far
Pros

Value, comfort

Cons

None so far

Bought a '25 Palisade in Nov '24. After 5 months, one cros country road trip and 9k miles. I can say I'm 100% happy with the vehicle. We bought with road trips in mind and it didn't disappoint. VERY comfortable, plenty of power, good milage. After looking at the competition this vehicle is the best value in my opinion. May not be the best overall...only time will tell but for the money...no one can beat it
