One of the best trucks I’ve driven. I traded in my 2020 4 Runner. I test drove the 2025 Land Cruiser. This car surpassed the Land Cruiser and 4 Runner on every aspect of driving experience. On top of that, the new 4 Runner and Land Cruiser require premium fuel.
Critical Review

I wanted to like the car and did but one thing led to another and couldn’t justify the debt with so many things that bugged me… -The headlights low beams are not that great and I’m use to better on cheaper older cars. For the price not sure why they are not projectors? Are 2023 Subaru is 10k less and the headlights blow the pp away, it’s like they’re not even on when I park them side by side at night. -The 2 piece dash reflects into the windshield, and where the 2 pieces meet it puts a line right in the middle of your view. Once you see it you cant un see it, I had to get polarized glasses to negate the reflection. -Was only getting 17mpg, but the worst part is the small tanks size of 18g. So was getting about 288 per tank and constant fill ups. -The camera quality is very grainy…again our 2023 10k less Subaru camera quality is so much crisper. -Maintenance mode for the wipers is pretty silly having to turn on and off your car to lift your wipers, so cant really lift your wipers if they are already sitting under snow load. -Wasn’t that impressed with the bose system, and very very basic tuning controls for an eq. -I liked the idea of a v6 but not a 3cyl…vcm is not for me. Keep it in sport or tow to have it go into 3cyl much less often. (No vcm bypass for these newer non vtec) -The transmission gear hunts between 1-4 and feels jerky. Apparently it has adaptive learning…too bad my driving style changes day to day and this wasn’t smoothing out. -It’s 2026 whats up with a timing belt? -still using the direct injection that leads to carbon build up. -This beast weighs almost as much as my truck (4,700lb+) and is super sluggish unless in sport or sequential drive. Our Subaru at 100 less hp feels more sporty. -Also the payload for this beast is only 948lb, so with 4 people you could be maxed out even before you put gear/cooler in it. The payload on our Subaru is 1,270lbs! -The clearance for an advertised trail rig should be more than 8”. (I put a spacer lift on it but those kinda suck as it limits the travel and articulation and the suspension bottoms out sooner.) -Not having a full size spare come in the trail options is weird, you can store one vertical for a kings ransom and loose half you cargo/sleeping area. -the front and rear sensors weren’t consistent in alerting for movement even after sensitivity adjustment. -the lane warning i thought was weird that it shook the wheel, shook the wheel and audible alert, or nothing at all. I would have liked just an audible alert and no shaking of my steering wheel. Also it only works when going over 40mph, so no warnings when driving thru town on tight windy roads. -the hatch is miss aligned, one side its almost touching the other side is a quarter inch gap -also some black speckle paint blemishes around the rear quarter glass. -The Honda link app is very buggy too. I did think it was comfy. Lots of head room for tall people. I liked the size and glad i had the 360 cams as it almost 80” wide so not sure how i could park this thing without them. If you tow i could see this being an option being able to tow 5,000lb…but weak payload has me scratching my head for why a tower would want such a weak payload? Seats fold flat is nice. The cargo space is huge at 83cuft (but 948 payload?!)
We bought our 2026 TrailSport last spring and it has proven to be a great vehicle for our needs. We are retired and have 3 Boxers we like to take with us when we wander off the main roads. I also need a vehicle that can tow a sizable utility trailer. It tows 3500# easily. We also travel at least once a year from Ohio to Florida. The Passport excels at doing all 3 tasks. I have had no issues outside of a finicky Apple Car Play occasionally. It gets 24-25mpg on the highway and 19 in town. I’m ok with that as I expected that when we bought it. The ride comfort and handling is much better than a previous 4Runner I owned but is not as much fun to drive as our previous Mazda CX-5 we traded on this. We miss the high quality interior of the CX-5 but the Passport’s interior is suited for its rugged attitude. I’d buy it again if given the choice.
I did my research before buying this vehicle. we ( myself and my wife) drove all the competition in it's class 4 Runner, Land cruiser, Grand Cherokee, subaru outback. by far the passport is the highest value. the engine responds well, the fit and finish is very nice, the cargo and passenger room is far more than almost anyone would ever need and the capability of daily driving is the best all around.
