"One of the best I have owned in 30 years"

This was our first new car. It has performed far better than one would expect for its price point. Smooth transmission, quick handling, fast..no need for a 6 cyl. We have traveled all over the east coast with this car from Maine to Florida. It handles mountains with A/C on without any lag. After 17 years and almost 170,000 miles, we are selling it. Alas, my spine no longer will let me get in and out of a low slung sports coupe. The Probe has aged better over the last 17 years than I have, LOL. The Probe was one of the best sports coupe that Ford built, except of course for the iconic Ford Mustang. It had the advantage of being a Mazda with a Ford body. Stylish, it still looks great after all these years and we never felt like we were driving an old car. Put the seats down and you have a small station wagon. Its amazing what you can fit in that car. I hate to sell it, but after buying a new Fusion, I really can't afford to keep it and our Jeep too. I just hope the next driver of this amazing vehicle appreciates it as much as I do.

Critical Review

"money pit"

purchased this 93 4yrs ago for my son, thinking it would be a good car for high school/ college. Immediately spent 700 to have the ignition module/ distributer changed to even run, then 1800 to have the tranny completely rebuilt, then another 350 to repair front axle bearing assembly, car has done fairly well since then, but has a persistent belt squeal that doesn't seem to have a fix. Car rides and drives very well, looks sporty and fun, but paint is poor, and the interior door panels are pathetic. great car when running if you can overlook the cheap door panels.

My favorite car of all time
Pros

FUN, reliable, easy to drive

Cons

tricky to get in the back seat (coupe doors)

I still have my 25-year-old Ford Probe that I financed directly from the dealer! This car has been my favorite that I've owned. It can make sharp turns like no other vehicle we have had and it's just FUN to drive, like a toy car but far more secure and stable! The agility is second to none. So glad I held on to this car for this long because it has performed amazingly well. I wish Ford would bring them back!

Driven Hard 16-20yr old
Pros

Drives like a Go-cart and super reliable

Cons

Suspension/ lack of replacement parts

The motor was snappy like a toy. Close gear ratios let it be snappy off the line and get decent gas mileage. Got it at 117k and put 50,000 of the hardest miles I’ve ever put a car through. Rev limit tap all winter and 40 and 60 rolls all summer. Only thing that stopped it was lack of transmission oil. My stupid self never checked it. With 16 fluid oz of factory gear oil the transaxle lasted 15,000 miles of hard use. Found an mx6 trans for cheap and she’s still going strong. Bout $500 total in maintenance and she’s ready to go for another owner. Mazda sure can build a motor.

I loved my Probe, Kerby!
Pros

Fun to drive, love me a stick shift!

Cons

Very low to ground. Fuel pump in tank

1st stick I've ever owned with cruise control. Classy headlights that flip up, lotsa room in hatchback for dog & great power for 4cyl. (Not the greatest 'ump', fully loaded w kids, going up our mountains tho). Teen son hated it, so low-slung, he could never see the drive thru girl! Also, I only had room under the car for my head, going in side-ways. Great little guy tho, pondering selling.

Pros

great gas mileage, fun to drive

Cons

Love this car
Pros

Handles great, good on gas considering the power

Cons

backseat cramped

Bought this car new in '97. Fun to drive, fits like a glove and still runs like new after 16 years. Hatchback allows hauling big loads, a plus. Backseat not comfortable for riding but who cares. I leave the seat down all the time and the dog loves it. I have replaced used parts from the internet without problem. Great A/C. Design still looks current. In fact I've had the younger crowd think it was something new, since they weren't alive when they were made. The only problem I have is that I can't part with it for a newer car. Not much to gain.

Best car ever
Pros

Fun to drive, great gas mileage

Cons

Cup holders don't really hold cups secure

I purchased this in 2002,from a local use car dealership. From the moment I first sat in my car... I knew this was going to be my baby. I LOVE MY CAR. I get great gas mileage 26 in the city about 30 on the highway. It's comfortable, fun, and I just love my car. The only bad thing is... in the past ten years I had to replace the transmission (thankfully cover by my warranty) and electrical problem which cost 2 grand. Cup holders don't work to hold coffee secure enough when making turns. But, great gas mileage 26 city 30+highway
