Compact SUV Crossover

Which 2022 Hyundai Tucson is Right for Me?

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson is an all-new take on the brand’s well-known compact SUV. It takes a big leap in technology, connectivity, and styling. That dramatic, angular sheetmetal, though, may not be for everyone. Tucson also includes Hyundai’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

For the first time, the Tucson is available with a choice of gas, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid powertrains. The gasoline-powered Tucson is powered by a 2.5-liter inline-4-cylinder engine making 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. AWD is available for $1,400.

The Tucson Hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-4 making 180 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. Using a 59-hp electric motor-generator, it provides a combined 226 horsepower. The Tucson Hybrid PHEV is powered by the Tucson Hybrid’s 1.6-liter turbo inline-4, a 13.8-kWh lithium-ion battery, and a 90-horsepower electric motor-generator. It has a battery-only range of 32 miles. Both hybrid models use a 6-speed automatic transmission.

All Tucson models have a max towing capacity of 2,000 pounds.

All-New Third-Generation

This new third-generation Tucson is a big improvement over the previous model. Its new “Sensuous Sportiness” design language brings angular and crisp character lines. Its stout chassis is complemented by a suspension that is tuned to be sporty without being too firm or floaty. There’s comfortable room for five passengers, and in back, an extra three inches of legroom. Attention to detail is everywhere, including the new quiet interior employs a triple-laminated windshield and additional sound-deadening material.

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson comes standard with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. The base interior includes cloth seats and 8-inch touchscreen display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as well as Qi wireless charging are standard.

From a safety standpoint, Hyundai’s SmartSense suite includes lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, forward-collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection. This standard package also includes automatic high beams, driver attention monitoring, and a rear occupant alert.

Hyundai Tucson Trim Levels

The Hyundai Tucson is available in eleven trims. They include base Tucson SE, Tucson SEL, Tucson SEL (in Convenience, Premium, and Limited levels), and Tucson N-Line. On the hybrid side, there is the Tucson Hybrid Blue, Tucson Hybrid SEL Convenience, Tucson Hybrid Limited, Tucson PHEV Blue, and Tucson PHEV Limited.

Pricing starts at $24,950 for the base Tucson SE and tops out at $37,350 for the Tucson Hybrid Limited. Pricing is not yet available for the Tucson PHEV but we can only imagine it coming in above the Hybrid Limited. All-wheel drive is available on all trim levels for an additional $1,400. Destination charges for all models are $1,185.

The 2022 Hyundai Tucson SEL Premium ($30,800) is our choice for that sweet spot between base trim and top-shelf features and prices. This model includes hands-free power liftgate, 19-inch alloy wheels, 10.25-inch digital gauges, Qi Wireless charging, LED interior lights, auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone climate control, rear occupant alert, leather seating, ventilated front seats, Bose premium 8-speaker audio system, and LED daylight running lights.
